That wasn't to say that she didn't welcome Ranma's marriage to the other girl, or understand why he would desire her. To be honest, Nabiki had taken note of the fact that the girl in question had a slim figure with the sort of long and shapely legs that would set off many a hormonal boy's daydreams. Not that it was only her physical beauty that appealed, as having such an emotional and confident young woman around made for a rather appealing situation. If nothing else, it was like dealing with a more intellectual and dignified version of her younger sister.
And she couldn't help but smile at the sound of the voice as it came on the phone. "Hello, Nabiki. Calling to bother me?"
"You wound me, Rei," Nabiki mocked-complained, pressing a hand lightly to her bosom, despite the fact that she knew that it wouldn't be seen. "Why would a call from me always call you trouble? I have called for reasons that were perfectly legitimate."*
*"True. But you have also called me to simply tease and talk."
"I'll give you that. But why be bothered before I said anything?"
"Well, you talked to my grandfather," Rei informed the other girl. "Now he'll be wondering just why I haven't invited you over to 'visit'."
The middle Tendo daughter considered what she knew about her friend's grandparent, and couldn't help but wince. "I get your point. But I'm not trying to get you bothered right now."
"Don't worry. I'm not all that bothered by you. And I could handle it if I was."
"What? Going to sic your husband on me?"
"I wouldn't have to. I'd be able to handle it myself, even though he would do it for me," the married girl teased back in the same tones, with her words carrying the ring of truth.
"Well, you may get the chance to send him after someone...."
"Oh? Is that 'someone' going to cause us some trouble?"
"Not that I know of. But if that does happen, Ranma will be there to help handle it."
"And this is because...." Rei trailed off.
"He's coming back. I just learned about it a little bit ago."
"You're not joking, are you?"
"Not at all," Nabiki confirmed, and let her smile seep into her voice. "Your hubby's going to come back to you."
"I didn't hear a word about that...."
"I wouldn't have either, except through some surprising coincidences."
"I can't believe it," the married girl whispered, her voice raspy with hope and joy. "I've been waiting so long, and now.... But how did you learn about this before I did."
"I won't take that as an insult to my friendship with him, seeing as I understand how things are between you two."
"Sorry about that. But still...."
"Apology accepted. And let me just tell you about a little something that my father and Ranma's cooked up...." Nabiki murmured, and started explaining about a certain 'arrangement', while:
