Ash was not one of those people.
Instead, he was more of the 'fly by the seat of your pants' type. He wasn't one for theoretical materials, as he had little patience for sitting around. Even though he was smaller than a lot of boys his age growing up, he never really gave up, and he tended to persevere despite whatever problems he might face. On the other hand, he tended to do better with practical knowledge, like recorded statistics, and personal observation.
But for all his practical ability, his sense of timing had always been rather... notorious.
So, to see him enter the lab an hour earlier than had been previously scheduled was a bit... different.
"Hi, Professor!" Ash said, apparently at ease at the moment.
Oak merely nodded back. "Hello, Ash. Come to get your pokegirl, have you now?"
"Of course! Unless...."
"What?"
"Is there something wrong?"
"I wouldn't say that...."
"Then what would you say."
"Ash, you're here an hour early," the Professor told him with a flat look. "The others won't be here until seven."
"Oh.... So we have to wait for them?"
"Not particularly. You see, it is 'first come, first served'."
"Great! Can I get a really strong one? I'd like to get a special one that's rare, but... What?" the soon to be summoner asked.
"You know that you can't get a pokegirl that's too powerful. You need to start off with a basic one, and strengthen her up. The more powerful ones need to be handled by someone with the proper experience, and the fact is that the truly special ones can be very hard to handle."
"Yeah...."
"Now, do you want to get your pokegirl?"
"Sure!"
The Professor smiled, and led the boy over to the choosing area, where:
