Lab Days - Bishiegate: Red Dragon [Episode 148350]

by Kestral

After school had let out, Akane was neatly able to avoid Tatewaki Kuno by the simple expedient of reaching the roof. Then she simply spread her wings and leapt into space.

Each downward thrust of her wings was powerful but that wasn't sufficient to keep her airborne. As with Kasumi and the various other winged girls around, she could feel something shift within her and that feeling of lightness begin.

She wasn't as good a flyer as Kasumi. She wasn't as manueverable, nor could she manage the act of flight for as long. Kasumi herself wasn't as air-worthy as an Angel, for that matter. There was talk about some girls who still hadn't come down from their initial flight but chose to hover or float as if afraid the moment that they touched ground they'd not be able to lift off again.

Though things were still in the experimental stage, it was only a little over the second week after the Bishojo Plague had struck, some trends were noticeable. Angels were simply the best fliers. Genies with an air element were next. Succubi and animorph bird-girls followed. Dragongirls, gynoids with flight capability, and others were among the clumsiest of fliers. That said, Akane found the ability terribly useful at times.

The changes to Akane were several. She had the changes that everyone else did, including some that caused problems when she was bathing or putting on her underwear. She had had to replace all of her bras with a set two sizes larger than her previous set. She had, like many of those transformed, had to make alterations to her school uniform and her wardrobe.

First were the wings. While wondrously flexible, she had to unsnap and resnap a section along the back so that her wings fit through a pair of added "slots." Her long thin tail wasn't quite as prehensile as that of a monkey, but she had needed to make accomodations for that as well. The cute little fangs weren't that unusual - many animorphs had them.

Her hands and feet looked mainly the same except for the plates of thick red scale.

She was stronger than she had been previously, but less flexible. Slower and more massive. Swimming was apparently out of the question entirely, and would not be required of her. Not that she was alone in that, as the first time a large group of full animorphs had been put through it - the smell of wet fur had permeated Furinkan High School for the rest of the afternoon. Most animorphs lacked fur.

Then there was the ones who just absolutely couldn't handle the water.

Akane's sense of hearing seemed more sensitive than ever. Her sense of smell, she estimated at roughly half - likewise her sense of taste was muted. She had a craving for meat more than veggies and had apparently couldn't handle onions very well. Her sense of sight had lost a few colors, but she could focus in with greater detail on distant objects.

Therefore, as she passed over his head, Akane was quite aware that Kuno was upset about her escape, but he wasn't of great concern for her.

The skies above Tokyo were no longer as clear as they had been, particularly at low elevations. There were enough girls with flight capability that female forms zipping along overhead were becoming increasingly common. Some, like Hiroshi and Daisuke, were continually trying to catch a glimpse of panties from those wearing skirts during airborne manuevering. One had to keep an eye out while flying or one could run into stationary objects or other fliers all too easily.

That said, that was not Akane's main concern. No, it was the social dynamics she found herself stuck with.

Most of the girls looking for someone were looking for "the someone special just for them." There was a feeling there in their hearts that the one for them was their other half, that there was someone whose presence would complete them. In some cases when this other was found, absolutely no change in behavior was noted by others. In some cases there was a MAJOR change in behavior. That didn't really concern Akane. She was fairly sure that if she found her someone special, that she would not be wriggling against them or purring or anything similar.

No, what preoccupied Akane and concerned her was that when she tried to focus on the errant feeling of there being a someone special out there - she didn't get the impression of "just for her."

Circling her home at her maximum altitude, her eyes easily picked up the form on the roof. She was of mixed feelings on confronting anyone at the moment, but finally decided she'd have to land and might as well acknowledge the individual.

"(So you're saying your sister Akane was the first to change?)" asked Daniel, jotting down notes.

"(Yes, this is so,)" said Nabiki, unconsciously radiating cold to show her displeasure at Jack's earlier comment.

Jack muttered about getting such a cold shoulder and so literally, but otherwise just looked over Carter's shoulder to see what the instruments were doing.

A thump from overhead caused most of them to briefly look up at Akane's ceiling.

"(Who's up there?)" asked Daniel.

Nabiki made a dismissive gesture. "(Oh, that's just -)"
