Everyone else just stared at Ranma as if he had lost what little sense he had.
"You heard me, I'll take the damn ring!" declared Ranma.
Knowing that Ranma had just accepted his doom, Cologne checked on Akane. "She's barely breathing. One of you help me get her to a table, gently now."
Cologne checked the girl, tapping at pressure points. Finally Akane gasped and seemed to breathe easier.
"Well?" asked Nabiki, glancing distrustfully at Ranma.
"The next few hours will tell if she survives, and how much of her survives," said Cologne. "The Ring is Evil. Spare me any sermons of relative good or quasi evil from modern philosophies. The Ring is Evil and if a means had been found to destroy it, it would have been removed from existence as soon as that method was found. Happosai sought to use it, but it is far more likely it would have used him or simply rejected him. Strong emotions are more likely to draw it than anything else."
Ranma looked up from the ring gleaming on his finger. "So now I'm gonna die."
"Eventually," said Cologne. "Ah, I'm getting too old for this. I'd hoped by now to see Shampoo marry and on her path to having a family. Instead THAT has crossed my path again. Now, if you don't mind. I'll need to watch over and care for Miss Tendo for several hours. The rest of you, try to keep Ranma there from making any wishes or doing anything stupid."
"Does the term 'impossible' reside in your vocabulary," grumped Nabiki.
