"Akane was in trouble! If I didn't do anythin'...." Ranma trailed off.
"I don't want to lose my sister like that, but adding another victim to its list isn't exactly a good thing. You actually thought that this was a good plan?"
"I... just acted. I figured that someone had ta do it."
"And that someone was you."
"Of course. Someone had ta make the decision, and I've always wanted to be the one in charge. In fact, I've always w...."
Despite not being a martial artist, Nabiki cleared the distance between them and had her hand over his mouth before he could say anything more. "You are not about to use the 'w' word. I have little desire to be mindlessly fawning over you, or going through any other problems if you complete that thought. Remember. Not a single one!"
Ranma nodded, obviously chagrined at what he'd been about to do... again.
She slumped down in front of him and tried not to blow out a breath. This was bothersome work, since Ranma had never been known for his ability to control what he said. With the situation, Akane's problem, and his own desires, he had plenty of possibility for a mistake. As it was, she was having to watch him like a hawk, trying to watch for any sign that he might be actually about to make a wish.
It tired her out, and obviously Cologne was feeling the same as she came into the room. They had both been working for hours, with the problems that this ring could cause. This was not something nice, and she knew that the two of them would likely have a lot of work in the future.
"How is she?" Ranma asked the Elder.
Cologne raised a weary gaze to his features. "She'll survive, but as it is, she will never be able to practice martial arts again. Her body has gotten to be rather frail, and while she may walk, she won't be exercising in any real capacity again. That thing took at least a decade or two of her life, though she looks like it was much more."
"But she was getting so... old...."
"A lot of that was from the Ring pulling at her lifeforce. It was trying to suck all of it up at once, but your actions allowed it to stop its feeding, and the energies that would have been taken away were bounced back into her. That allowed for a bit of healing, and with what I've done, she's stabilized. However, her hair is now white, and she'll never show much strength more than any other girl her age, if that. That physical power that she'd had is forever gone."
"What about her mind?" Nabiki asked.
"I do not know, as she's sleeping at the moment. But it was a traumatic experience for her, and the Ring is not nice on personalities when it feeds."
"Just great...."
"My sentiments exactly," Cologne replied.
The two teens sighed, and considered the news while:
