However, someone apparently needed to speak to her, as the phone rang. She left her memories with a gentle sigh, and hoped that it would not be another problem call, even as she picked up the receiver. "Hello? Saotome residence."
*"Hello there, Auntie!"* said a familiar voice.
"Nabiki! How nice to hear from you!"
*"It's good to be heard, Auntie."*
"Have you decided to brighten an old woman's day?"
The teenager made a rude noise over the phone, and sounded like she wished that she hadn't. *"Sorry about that, but you're sure ain't old. If I look half as good as you when I'm your age, I'll count myself as lucky."*
"That's good of you to say, dear. But if this isn't a social call, then why make it? Do you need some help? Or maybe you have finally found a boy that you like...."
*"Auntie! Stop trying to fix me up!"*
"I do worry, Nabiki. A pretty girl like you should have plenty of boys after her,"* Nodoka replied, genuine concern coloring her voice.
*"I have all the boys after me that I could want. And my call isn't about my love life, or anyone else's. It's about your family life."*
"Oh?"
*"Dad just got a postcard. Your husband's heading over here, and he's bringing Ranma with him."*
Joy like a butterfly shedding its cocoon started fluttering in the Saotome Matriarch's chest. "My baby boy is coming back?"
*"He isn't a 'baby' anything, but he is on his way to my house. Which can be a problem."*
"Why? Did something happen between you and my son?"
*"Sort of. You see, Dad let us in on a little plan that he and your dim... er, husband cooked up. Apparently, years back, before any of us 'kids' were born, they decided that Ranma would marry one of my sisters, or me."*
"That is news to me. And it is quite impossible to complete. My son already has a wife."
*"Tell that to them. Knowing my Dad, and what I know of Genma, they aren't likely to just take this easy."*
"I know," Nodoka agreed with a frown. She knew her son's wife, and she truly cared for the girl. Makoto was such a sweet child with such a rough life that she couldn't help taking the brunette under her wing. But it had been the girl's strong spirit, womanly skills, and love for Ranma that had made it clear that she was for him. They shared that caring for that young man, and they had gotten along wonderfully. And since the way that he had watched and acted around his future wife had proven that he would be truly manly with her. It was all that a mother could want.
*"Well, the three of us aren't about to rock the marriage of our friends, no matter what."*
"I wouldn't expect you to. I do suppose that Genma was going to try to slip this in without me noticing before he could show it to me when he wants to."
*"He'd do that, wouldn't he?"* Nabiki dryly asked.
"In an instant. But I'm not about to let him do this."
*"What are you going to do?"*
"I'll be stopping by for a visit as soon as I can prepare myself. So, I'll be there later on today."
*"Should surprise them."*
"I do hope so."
*"Well, I'll see you, and Makoto then, I suppose."*
The elder woman raised a brow, though she knew that the teenager wouldn't see her. "You let her know, already?"
*"She's his wife, and they love each other. I had to make certain that she was the first to know. Sorry if I hurt your feelings...."*
"Oh, no. It wasn't that. I was just glad that she was told first. It was only proper."
*"Then it's a good thing that I called her. I'll see you and her later then."*
"Until then," the redheaded matron replied, hanging up her phone, and smiling to herself. As far as she was concerned, there would be no question as to what would happen. This promise was already impossible to continue, and her son had to be reunited with his wife. They were such a loving couple, and there was no way that she wanted anything to disturb that, including her own husband's schemes.
After all, if he had truly wanted to make certain that she would know about the promise before she had given her permission for Ranma and Makoto to marry.
Shaking her head at her husband's impetuous nature, she started to prepare for her trip, while:
