Switching Places/Eva!: Picking Away at Margaritaville [Episode 150534]

by The Demented Redhead

In a jet going over the Eurasian landscape, sat one Dr. Amanda Frost.

Was she pissed? More than a little, given her enforced quick departure to Japan and NERV’s main facility. She’d barely been able to ensure she had packed the necessary clothes before her ‘escort’ nearly dragged her to a waiting vehicle.

But she remained quiet. Bosses like the ones she now had didn’t take complaints too well.

The journey was not without reward, given the data she was currently looking over.

Could it really be it, could it really be a Holy Grail of genetics?

Even after the reports were handed in—and then immediately sealed—there were those who doubted the final conclusion of the sterility of human evolution. More than a few were of the voiced opinion that it had never stopped. It only lulled when the need for advancement was not met.

In other words, humans had become so good at adapting, their need for their body to adapt was forgotten, lulled to sleep. Without a need to evolve, to reach farther, there was no need for genes to shift, for new combinations and thus new evolutions to arise.

A boulder will sit in one place, unless an external stimulus is used to move it in any direction.

A crude analogy, but the best one for the situation.

But then Ranma Ikari was found.

From the limited data she had—which was a lot, Akagi was thorough if nothing else—Ranma might be the link. Could he have found a way to evolve? Was he an experiment? Was it natural? Could it be duplicated?

Perhaps Nature had not been sitting on her heels, waiting for the need to arise. Was it environment or parents?

And why had this remained hidden for so long? Surely the boy’s guardian would have noticed this Ranma was definitely taller than most children his age. If not for the proof before her, she’d have been tempted to classify him at the age of eighteen more than fourteen. Perhaps a genetic addition? They did once say kids grew up too damn fast. Maybe something in the genetic code of Ranma Ikari made that true.

Thousands of questions were popping into her mind, dozens of experiments she would need to run, just to even begin to design a base profile for Ranma, let alone determine if he was truly the next stage of human evolution.

At least she was certain of one thing if what his ... measurement ... were saying was true: Mother Nature was throwing human females a nice gift.

As the NERV transport vehicle made its way into the parking complex of the Geo-Front, a few things were certain.

One: there was more than one bottle of the special drink. The First Child was coveting a nearly full bottle, while the Third Child was dangling the first; now empty, from his tongue.

Two: the non-pilot who had come with them could not hold her liquor. The pilots had somehow convinced her to take a swig—Ranma had said that if the Angel-thingy won, she’d be dead anyway—and had passed out a few minutes later.

Three: the pilots could hold their liquor quite well.

“Our lives rest in their hands,” sadly said the driver.

“I’m still not going out with you, Minato,” said his female passenger.

“Damn.”
