Ed turned his head from watching some ground crews load his Sword Calamity onboard a transport plane along with the Forbidden Blue, while a second transport was having the Raider Full Spec and Buster Dagger loaded onboard. “As much as I’d like to stay Miss Cagalli, the longer I dally here the less time I have to get to work in helping the USSA fight against the Atlantic Federations invasion forces.”
“I can understand that.” Cagalli nods sympathetically. “I wish you good luck on your endeavor; it won’t be easy you know.”
”I know it won’t but I have to try.” Ed says with conviction. “It is my homeland and I’ll be damned if I miss the chance to keep her free from being oppressed again.”
Smiling softly Cagalli offers her hand. “If you need anything don’t hesitate to ask.”
Shaking the offered hand firmly he smiles back. “Thank you…so how’s the kid doing?”
”You mean Kou? He’s sleeping like the dead he’s pretty exhausted.” She said with a straight face as to not give any indication it wasn’t just the battle yesterday that tired him out.
Ed looked out at the clean up crews hauling the busted Obsidian Abyss mobile suits to the Morgenroete factory. “I’d say the mess he made speaks for itself. I’ve never seen someone that young so talented with mobile suits.”
”Its not a role he wanted it sorta got thrusted upon him.” Cagalli sighed as she recalled his experiences from last night’s confession.
“Kisaka mentioned a little to me that the kid said those bastards tried to recruit him through some orphanage scam.” Ed says in recollection. “It’s a sad fact but child soldiers like him are even more common than teenage soldiers like you and your friends. Kids are impressionable and easier to brainwash to do your dirty work, so a lot of fanatics and assholes use em’ like dime a dozen soldiers.”
Cagalli nods her head silently. “I hate war.” She said out of the blue. “I just hate it and all the misery it brings even if it’s a “necessary” war.”
”Last time I heard of a war that was necessary was World War II back in the 20th century. Any other war after that seems to be just a waste of life.” Ed muses. “I don’t like it either, I joined as a soldier to help defend my country not to wage wars of hate and genocide, but that seems to be the range among the masterminds of the recent conflicts.”
”Hey Ed we’re all loaded and set to go!”” Jane Houston shouted as she ran over towards them from the second transport plane.
“I guess that’s our cue to scram.” He turns to Cagalli and nods his head politely. “Thank you again for putting up with us.”
”Don’t mention it.” Cagalli said as she shook both their hands. “Take care of yourselves and be careful.”
“Don’t you worry we will.” Jane smiles as she hooks her arm through Ed’s and the two walk onboard the transport plane.
Cagalli stands on the tarmac watching the two unidentifiable transport planes lift off into the morning sky. She lets out a soft sigh. “Well time to get to work.” She says to herself before turning to head toward where her car was parked.
Meanwhile:
Lowe Gear took a bite of his breakfast at a slower pace than usual. The Junk Guild engineer looked more subdued than usual and deeper in thought.
“Um Lowe are you alright this morning? You’ve hardly eaten half your breakfast with your usual gusto.” Kisato asked him with concern in her voice.
”Kisato is correct normally you would have eaten 80% of your food by now but you’ve hardly touched 40%.” Eight’s screen and new voice module spoke.
“I’ve just…got a lot on my mind.” Lowe sighs setting his fork down.
”Has it anything to do with recent events?” Liam asked before taking a sip of his coffee.
“Yeah it does. Ya’know I normally try to not let this sort of thing get me down but, seeing Orb get attacked twice and with everything from those Obsidian Abyss creeps to the USSA revolt, a lot of things have been happening and just being a bystander to half of it is pissing me off!”
“Hell the whole war pissed me off, seeing both the bad and good side of humanity working throughout the conflict, but dammit now we got another bunch of racist jerks out to ruin the peace we finally attained!”
Liam nods setting down his cup. “It is very disturbing. I’m still shocked such a group who’s amassed so much hardware, and formed such an elaborate intelligence and spy network has remained unknown for so long.”
Kisato took a bite of toast and chewed it nervously. “Do you think another war’s going to break out?”
”If those bastards have their way it will!” Lowe punches his fist into his open palm. “I don’t want that to happen I don’t want to see people dying en’ mass again.” Lowe then sighed before looking at his friends seriously. “Ya’know I’m tempted to go up to Cagalli or Kisaka and asked if I can help em’ fight these bastards.”
This caused Kisato and Liam to blink rapidly while Eight’s screen displayed this “!!!”.
“Lowe you do realize you would be making yourself into a soldier more or less. Even thought the Three Ships Alliance isn’t truly bond to one nation or PLANT or Earth they do consist of former Earth Alliance, ZAFT and Orb military and civilian personnel.”
“I know Liam but…maybe I need to think about it some more.” Lowe sighs and resumes eating his food.
