Later it would be seen as a horrible dream or misunderstanding, and those responsible - both those who had personally killed the afflicted or who had merely encouraged that activity - would absolve themselves and go on with business as usual.
There were precedents, after all. Some of the activities in the wake of the 1918 influenza outbreak were along such lines and quickly forgotten by the culture at large.
For now it was still that many sought refuge. Some relationships broke up, with one partner suddenly unable to face what had occurred. Some grew stronger as the transformee was now in a situation where the other could nurture and protect - and did so.
While the epidemic continued to rage, a haycart rumbled up a mountain slope and Cologne slipped out next to the driver.
"Quiet," said the driver, one eye glancing at the formerly old gnarled woman.
"I used pressure points," explained Cologne. "They'll be napping for awhile yet."
"Near," said the driver, rotating his shoulders with an audible pop.
"Yes, we should be safe at this point," said Cologne, rapping briefly on the wood of the wagon. "Now that we're in the mountains, we won't run into as many people."
"Rest," suggested the driver.
"When I get back to the village, not before." Cologne looked around. "I appreciate you taking us this far."
The large fellow shrugged, not saying anything.
Cologne appreciated the guy not getting all talkative, but she wondered if the large farmer was even capable of generating a complete sentence.
Ranma stood in one corner of the crowded plane and wondered when his life would return to normal.
Getting thwacked in the face by someone's wings was getting real old real fast.
What alarmed him was how quickly his little group of refugees had snowballed. Now there were a couple of pilots and a plane load of people heading to ?!
"Where's this plane heading?" asked Ranma, realizing that this might take him a bit out of his way.
"We're heading to-"
