Minako listened to her headset. "Communications are green. No nearby traffic."
Ami nodded and began the process of applying energy to the ring generator. "Bringing up power to drive."
"The needle thingie's in the green area," said Usagi, completely forgetting the terms she'd been coached in for the past six months.
There were a few groans following Usagi's lapse, especially from Rei.
Makoto looked at Usagi's board. "She's right. Stabilizers are active at 10/10."
"Thank you," said Ami. Her future career, the science fair, and perhaps humanity's future itself all hinged on the success of this experiment. Not to mention the last three years of preparation for this day. She took a moment to look around the room at her friends, all of whom had volunteered for this project of hers. All had their own reasons, in addition to friendship, of course.
"Everyone please evacuate past the marked area," said Makoto into a microphone that carried her words outside the capsule. "Disengaging safeties."
"Drive at 50%," said Ami, her eyes not leaving her displays. "Professor Tomoe, beginning final countdown."
"Final countdown, aye," came the voice over the speaker. "Everything green at this end."
"Roger," Ami agreed, glancing over at Hotaru's place in the capsule. "10."
"This IS safe, right?" asked Usagi for what seemed the 5000th time to everyone else.
"Of course it's safe," said Rei. "We're only opening a rift in space/time and making a leap from Japan to the moon in less than a second. What could go wrong?"
"Well," said Usagi. "One of the guys from the press was saying there was a chance we'd end up creating a black hole or something."
A brief silence was broken by Ami saying "5."
"We've gone over this, Usagi," said Minako. "You could've stayed behind."
"Maybe hiding from my Pop in here was a bad idea," said a voice from a materials cabinet.
"Is that you, Ranma?" asked Usagi.
"Yeah, Pops had another one of his weird ideas," said someone in a cabinet. "Ami-san said I could hide here."
Everyone looked at the blushing Ami then back at the cabinet.
"Am I on time?" asked Mamoru, knocking on the door and carrying a rose.
"Drive active," said Ami before the world turned white.
The viewers outside watched as the small capsule blurred into rainbow colors and vanished.
