"So you're Ranma?" said the bird-person, tugging at his beard and looking the youth over. "Hmph. What's Gnorrsh think he's pulling?"
"I'm here, ya know," said Gnorrsh.
"So what's a tengu gonna teach me?" asked Ranma.
"I have not agreed to this," said the tengu.
"Roshi here be da sensei of the Leaping Tiger style," said Gnorrsh. "My style take advantage of what I am. Strength, endurance, take lots of damage, draw on strength of land. Things like not being movable once I set myself. Not your style at all."
"Yeah, I remember that Immovability technique," said Roshi, nodding. "Very tough to beat."
"I could do it," said Ranma, "eventually."
Roshi laughed. "That technique roots him in place. Once he's used it, you could sooner shove Mount Kettle out of your path than move Gnorrsh when he's got his technique going."
"So I could outmanuever him," said Ranma. "He's rooted right?"
"He's good at manueverability, adaptability, and speed," said Gnorrsh. "Nobody said smarts was on the list."
"HEY!" said Ranma.
"Hmph," said Roshi. "We'll see. This'll pay you back for Broken Ridge though."
"It's the Queen's will this boy turn into a hero," said Gnorrsh. "I'll give yer a year."
"A human? A boy?" asked the dryad.
"Yes," said the sylph with a wink. "The Queen has declared him Heir."
"That is just, like, so totally like Amaranth," declared the naiad, pausing in the brushing of her hair.
"That would mean that whoever marries the boy would have an inside to the throne," indicated the dryad.
"Hmmmmm," hmmmed a pixie.
Elsewhere, Ranma was wondering what that chill was.
"You've heard the rumors?" asked Deedlit, setting down her goblet of feywine.
"A human boy," said Pirotess, smirking. "Brings back memories, doesn't it?"
"I wonder if he's as handsome as Parn was," said Deedlit, running a finger along the lip of her goblet.
"Perhaps he's as commanding as Ashram was," suggested Pirotess.
"Perhaps you two should adjust your libidos," said the barmaid, stopping on her rounds to regard the two. "He's got at least ten years before he's ready for that sort of complication."
"So Southfield's heir is human?" asked Prince Valium. "Furosemide! Vecuronium!" Though he raised his voice, his almost-oblivious calm air never faltered.
Two figures materialized out of the gloom. One extremely fat, the other thin and stooped over. "You rang, O Prince?"
Prince Valium nodded. "Tamoxifen."
An extremely busty elfgirl stepped out from behind a statue.
"This cannot be tolerated," said the Prince. "The curse I hired Cisplaten to put on Amaranth would keep her from having an heir. I didn't expect her to adopt, what with the various cliques and factions to fight over any native-born she'd choose."
"No doubt why she chose this human," put out Vecuronium. "You want this hume killed?"
"Not immediately," said the Prince, still looking almost bored with the whole thing. "Vecuronium, you are the master of poisons. Particularly paralytics. Wait for an appropriate time. Furosemide, Tamoxifen. Assist him. When he's away from his various instructors and guardians, paralyze him and bring him here but be circumspect. Lay false trails and the like. It will take a few years for the appropriate reception to be arranged in any case."
