Text-Based Yu-Gi-Oh GX: Opening Elemental Hero Barrage [Episode 156744]

by Yasanagi

Your opening hand consists of Magical Blast (Normal Magic), Dark Magician [LOB art] (7/2500/2100), Torrential Tribute (Trap), Trap Booster (Instant Magic) and Negate Attack (Instant Magic).

The hell?!? Explain Magical Blast, Trap Booster and why Negate Attack is an instant magic card.

Magical Blast (Normal Magic). This can only be activated when you have a Spellcaster monster on your side of the field. For each Spellcaster face up on the field, deal 200 points of damage to your opponent. If this card is in your graveyard, during your Draw Phase, you may place this card in your hand instead of drawing a card.

... what the hell type of duelist would play with this card in the first place?!?

Well... you have to understand that in the original Negima story, even though he's rumoured to know a thousand spells, Nagi only knows a few spells and reuses them often. So this card fits with that concept. For the Instant Magic Negate Attack, in the Japanese version of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, the animators had Negate Attack as an Instant Magic card (which was correctly changed to a Trap card in the dub). The story behind that blooper (in this universe) is that there had been a misprint of this card in the early days. It was always supposed to be a Counter Trap but the press accidentally printed out one sheet of Instant Magic Negate Attacks. There are only 100 in existence in the world (not as rare as the first print of Blue Eyes but still quite rare).

I see. Neat. And Trap Booster?

Trap Booster (Instant Magic). Discard a card from your hand to the Graveyard in order to activate a Trap card in your hand as though it had been set in your Magic/Trap zone. Anyways, Judai is about to take the opening turn.

So why did you bother telling me my opening hand?

Just wanted to keep you in the loop with an unfamiliar deck. Anyways, after drawing for his Draw Phase, Judai announced his moves quietly so that Sho wouldn't be disturbed from studying. "I activate Fusion Sage, which allows me to search my deck for 'Polymerization' and place it in my hand! Now I'll fuse Elemental Hero Avian (3/1000/1000) and Burstinatrix (3/1200/800) together to form Elemental Hero Flame Wingman (8/2100/1200) in attack mode!" FYI, the real Flame Wingman has six stars but in the anime, it has eight. Go figure.

What is Flame Wingman's special ability?

Whenever it destroys a monster as a result of Battle, the opponent takes direct damage to their Life Points equal to the attack of the destroyed monster. Note that Flame Wingman can only be summoned through fusion methods and can't be Special Summoned once destroyed. Judai continues his turn. "Next, I'll summon Elemental Hero Sparkman (4/1600/1400) in attack mode!"

Ok... I know this is going to screw me over in terms of card advantage but I need to blow up those monsters. Activate Trap Booster and discard Dark Magician to use Torrential Tribute!

Judai frowns before sending both monsters to the graveyard. "I'll place a card face down and then use the magic card... O-Over Soul! This card allows me to Special Summon a normal Elemental Hero monster from the graveyard and I choose Elemental Hero Sparkman (4/1600/1400)!" He finishes his move since he has no more cards in his hand.

Took long enough! Draw card.

You get Pot of Greed (Normal Magic).

Thank goodness! Play it.

You draw two more cards and they turn out to be Breaker the Magical Warrior (4/1600/1000) and Heavy Storm Blade (Equip Magic).

Heavy Storm Blade?

After you equip it to one of your monsters, when it attacks, all Magic and Trap cards except for Heavy Storm Blade are destroyed.

Kinda broken but I'll take it! Summon Breaker in attack mode and then equip it with Heavy Storm Blade! Enter Battle Phase and fry Sparkman!

Judai's Mirror Force trap card goes bye-bye as your monster destroys Sparkman to bring his LP down to 3700.

That'll do for now. End turn.

Judai draws and Special Summons Elemental Hero Bubbleman (4/800/1200) in defense mode since it's the only card in his hand. And because it's the only card he has on the field, he gets to draw two cards upon a successful summoning. He then activates the magic card Bubble Shuffle to switch Breaker into defense mode and Bubbleman into attack mode. Then the second effect of his card kicked in as he sacrificed Bubbleman to Special Summon another Elemental Hero monster from his hand and that monster happens to be Elemental Hero Bladedge (7/2600/1800). The only special ability it has is that it can pierce through Defense Mode monsters when it attacks and deal the difference as battle damage to your Life Points. Just like Cyber End Dragon and Mefist the Infernal General.

Aw... crap.

Breaker is destroyed and your Life Points go down to 2400 from his attack. Judai has nothing else to play so he ends his turn.

Draw card. I hope that I get something decent...
