But to have the chance to really enjoy a dinner two days in a row was something that he could certainly be pleased over... and certainly couldn't hide.
"You look happy," his eldest step-niece commented with a smile.
"'Course I am," Ranma agreed. "I've got all this good stuff ta eat."
"Why thank you!"
"It's no problem ta say. Ya guys put out some real nice food, ya know."
Soun smiled at his teenaged brother in law. "My wife and daughter are the best cooks around, aren't they?"
"I'd have ta agree. Man, if nothin' else, stayin' here is good for that."
"You'd stay for the food?"
"I don't mean ta be puttin' everythin' else that ya guys've done for me down, but it's pretty good ta eat stuff cooked like this."
"You like it then, little brother?" his sister asked.
"Sure do. Though...."
"What?"
"How did ya learn? I mean, our old man's not one for cookin', so...." the younger Saotome sibling replied.
Ranko looked over at where their father was looking put out at his seat, and nodded. "Pop never did have much time for cooking, did he?"
"Why should I?" Genma grumbled, seemingly unable to stop stirring his rice with his chopsticks. "I'm a martial artist, not a cook."
"We know."
"Oh?" Akane said, her tone saying more than the word.
Nodding, Ranma shrugged at her. "Travelin' with Pop means lots of campfire meals. Plenty of rice, and other easy ta cook stuff. Most of it was just like roasted meat, when we could get it, beans, or soup. And anythin' fancier still came outta boxes and cans. Not even when we'd rent a room would it get better in that."
"So, you ate enough, but didn't really get anything really good to eat."
"Pretty much, though we're not talkin' 'bout big meals. Only small ones. What with havin' ta carry supplies, and us not havin' much money ta begin with, it wasn't like we were gonna have a lot of food available ta us ta start with."
"Now I can see why you'd enjoy having food on the table like we do."
"Only, remember one thing for your safety, dear uncle," Nabiki commented.
"And what's that?" Ranma asked.
"Don't eat if Akane's cooking. Your stomach with thank you."
"Nabiki!" her younger sister snapped.
"What? We both know that your best cooking isn't exactly tasty."
"I'm working on that."
"I hope that you succeed."
"You do?"
"Yes. Otherwise, we'll all die of poisioning from having to try what you make."
"Grrr...."
The middle Tendo daughter grinned. "Just teasing, little sister."
"Is it really that bad though?" Ranma put in.
"She's doing better, though she isn't going to be winning any awards."
"Hmm. Wonder if she's as bad as Pop...."
"Probably worse. He had to learn to cook for the both of you, right?"
"Sure, but he never learned ta get real good with it. Ya'd fill up, and feel good when ya ate it, but...."
"It was never anything special."
"Yup," her step-uncle confirmed.
"Stupid boy.... I cook good enough that you eat it," Genma muttered.
"Sure ya do. I have ta eat somethin'. Ya never learned ta be a great chef."
"It was never in my plans to be one."
"Never said that ya did."
"Then why complain about it, boy?" his father admonished, puffing out his chest. "I do well in whatever I plan."
"That's certainly an exaggeration, to say the least," Ranko sniffed.
"Daughter...."
"Come on. Your ideas tend to be trouble... and you look rather pleased with yourself.... What are you into this time?"
"You shouldn't worry about what I do. My plans work out for the best."
"Since when?"
"Don't be like that. When have I.... had a bad idea?"
"You did bring Ranma here to marry one of us when your daughter is married to our Dad," Akane replied.
"Wasn't there a fight last night?" Kasumi murmured, looking thoughtful. "You were bothering Ranma at bed time."
Nabiki let herself give off a wry grin. "And you did snap at Dad for being married to Mom."
"I remember several ideas of yours from our youth...." Soun trailed off.
"Plus, it's like.... You're drunk, aren't you, Pop?" Ranko asked.
Genma turned his wobbly head towards his daughter. "I'll have you know that I only had a few drinks when I was out."
"Oh, Pop...." the redhead sighed as she covered her face with her palm, while:
