Sakura was back in her bedroom and she had detransformed. She looked at the brooch and put it down on her desk. Sitting on her bed, she closed her eyes and meditated. She could sense the magical power that resided within her, but currently it lay dormant.
"You were right Luna. The magic is mine. The brooch is just a crutch."
Luna nodded. "I told you it was yours. You just need the brooch to access it."
Sakura shook her head. "How do I go about accessing it without the brooch?"
Luna blinked at the question. "I--don't know. A lot of my memories are missing from the Silver Millennium."
"Silver Millennium? What's that?"
Luna sat down on the bed and started explaining.
"A long time ago, a thousand or maybe ten thousand years, there was a kingdom on the moon. It was destroyed by the Dark Kingdom and Queen Serenity used the last of her power to reincarnate her daughter and the members of her court in the present day. That is part of your mission. We have to find and protect the Moon Princess. As to the Dark Kingdom, Queen Serenity tried to destroy them during that time, but all she could do was seal them away until now."
"Now they're back and hunting people here on Earth that have no real way to defend themselves," Sakura concluded.
"Yes."
"What was that demon?"
"They are called Youma. They are from a dark realm, but not really demons."
Sakura wracked her brain trying to think of something she learned about occidental myths. "Unseelie Fairies? I think that's what inhuman creatures that weren't demons called."
"Something like that," Luna said. "But, you can't use cold iron to defeat Youma. That's why you have to transform."
"Magic to fight magic," Sakura muttered. "I might not have the time to shout out 'Moon Prism Power! Make Up!' when a fight comes along. I also need to be able to keep control of all my abilities. I could have killed a bunch of innocent people by accident, because I was so powered up and didn't know my own strength."
"What are you going to do about it?"
"Barring any challenges or Dark Kingdom forces, I'm going to be training," Sakura replied. "I'll transform and see just how powerful I am, then I'll try to take the transformation out of the brooch with my ki and make it part of me."
"That could be very dangerous," Luna said. "Get used to the powers through the brooch first before you try doing it without the brooch. Think of it as training wheels for a bicycle."
Sakura wrinkled her nose in disgust but could see the wisdom in the cat's suggestion.
"I guess I should tell mom and dad that I found a stray cat. I wonder what Tsukushi is going to think of you."
"Tsukushi?"
"My younger brother. He always beats me in video games," Sakura answered absently.
"You are not going to reveal that I can talk, are you?"
"I'm not that crazy. That can wait for later."
Luna breathed a sigh of relief.
"Once I no longer need a crutch to use my powers, I might reveal it then," Sakura said. "I'll just have to see what happens."
Sakura picked Luna up and carried her downstairs. She quickly told her family that Luna had followed her home after saving her from some bullies and wouldn't leave. Tsukushi rolled his eyes upward and shook his head. The Kasuganos allowed Luna to stay. After getting that out of the way, Sakura went back to her room and allowed Luna to jump to the floor. Sakura quickly changed into the clothes she would be wearing to school in the morning. She picked up the brooch and smiled.
"Moon Prism Power! Make Up!"
Sakura looked down and saw that her Sailor Moon outfit had reappeared. She grabbed a post-it note pad and wrote something don on the top piece of paper. She ripped the paper off and stuck it to her alarm clock. Luna quickly read aloud what was on the paper.
"Detransform from Sailor Moon?"
Sakura smiled at the puzzled expression on the cat.
"I need to get used to my magical powers. I'm going to sleep with them active. Since they will be active while I'm asleep, they shouldn't tire me out and I'll get my body used to the energy running through me."
"You were tired?" Luna asked in disbelief.
Sakura grimaced. "I did feel a bit weak when I got home. My guess is the magical powers were straining my body in ways it hadn't been strained before."
"Are you sure you want to do that?"
"Look Luna, Sailor Moon is part of me. However, I need that brooch to use those powers right now. I want to get rid of the need of the brooch and have the powers accessible to me at all times. By the way, do you have any other equipment that I might need?"
Luna did a backflip and a pen dropped out of subspace. Sakura picked up the pen and looked at it.
"That is a disguise pen. With it, you can disguise yourself to infiltrate areas."
Luna quickly explained how the disguise pen worked and Sakura nodded.
"A fast way to change clothing, hair styling, and make-up. An instant disguise kit."
Sakura snapped her fingers open and the disguise pen vanished.
"Will I be able to call the pen, while I'm depowered?"
Luna nodded. "Yes. The subspace pocket is available to you in both forms."
Sakura smiled. 'There is a way. I need to figure out how the subspace pocket accesses my magic and then I've got a handle on doing away with the brooch.'
Luna shook her head as she watched Sailor Moon crawl into bed and go to sleep. 'You are definitely not what I was expecting.'
