Accessing subspace wasn’t exactly easy, mainly because it took a while for Artemis to remember how Mau accessed subspace in the first place, but once the memories started coming back, the pair gained (or regained, depending on which one you meant) mastery of subspace fairly quickly—likely due to Ranma’s penchant for fast learning. By the time their boat reached Nagasaki (Genma had been forced to shell out the dough when he discovered that his son’s feline body wasn’t very well adapted for large-scale aquatic escapades, such as swimming the Sea of Japan) the pair had almost been able to make the storage of Ranma’s belongings a permanent habit when they were hit with cold water—progress which was, again, more than likely due to the teenager’s capacity for learning.
It wasn’t until they were on the outskirts of Tokyo that they learned why Genma wanted to hurry back to Nerima. Needless to say, they weren’t exactly thrilled. Married? Ya gotta be kiddin’ me! I don’t have time ta get married!
It’s not that bad, Ranma.
I just don’t understand how ya can be so freakin’ calm about this!
Look, Ranma, it’s not exactly what I would want, either, but you have to put things into perspective. Arranged marriages were fairly common in the days of the Silver Millennium, and it wasn’t so long ago that they were common in Japan, either.
Like that’s gonna make me feel any better about this? How’re we supposed ta help Venus if I get married? Or should I just tell my wife that I’m constantly slipping off ta spend time with another woman?
For all we know, the Tendos could turn out to be very open-minded people. We’ll just cross that bridge when we come to it.
Easy for you ta say. You ain’t the one havin’ a marriage sprung on ya.
Ranma, lest you forget, I’m going to be married to this person for all practical purposes as well.
Ranma didn’t miss a beat. That’s another thing… what if we end up havin’ different feelings for this girl? Then one of us is gonna have ta be miserable for the other one ta be happy.
Ranma, we’ve discussed this. You’re the one who’s allowing me to “ride along.” I want you to have as normal a life as you can—
Normal?
Well, as close to normal as is possible for someone who’s been informed that his life is destined to be a never-ending parade of chaos, and that there’s relatively little he can do about it. The point is, I don’t want to add to that chaos unless I have to.
Ugh. While I’m at it, how is this girl gonna react when she finds out I got a cat in my head?
I doubt she’ll be surprised, given that you turn into a cat when splashed with cold water….
Artemis? Is somethin’ wrong? Ya got all quiet again.
I was just thinking… maybe we should tell her about me.
What?! Have ya gone nuts? I don’t think we’ll be of much help ta Venus inside a padded cell.
Hear me out… if I talk to your fiancée while I’m a cat, that will more than likely encourage her to believe that Venus isn’t just some lame excuse we came up with to spend time away from her.
Hmmm… that could work, I guess. Lemme think about it, okay?
Right… and in the meantime, I’ll try to think of a way to find Venus.
Ain’t we got any clue as ta what she’ll be like?
Well, I do have some vague memories of her past incarnation, but other than that….
Given all of the thinking that Ranma and Artemis were doing about Sailor Venus, one might expect the reincarnation of the Senshi of Love to sneeze in accordance with the time-honored anime cliché. This did not occur, simply because Ranma and Artemis were as yet incapable of visualizing any details about their charge. After all, they had no way of knowing that Venus’ current incarnation was…
