Looking over what was going on in the front room of the inn, he could only think to say one thing. "I should have known better...."
"Has anyone seen my book of statutes?" Motoko called out as she searched the couches.
"I haven't," Kitsune commented. "But I'm going to need someone to keep an eye on things at the Tea House when I run to the bank."
"Shinobu! We've got to eat lunch!" Su yelled.
"I'll meet you after class," Shinobu responded, and turned to the sole male there. "Did you say something, sempai?"
"Nothing important," he told her.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Just thinking out loud."
"Oh, okay."
"What about you?" Keitaro asked. "Heading out?"
"Sure am. I've got classes, just like the rest of us."
"Speak for yourself, kiddo. Some of us have real work," Kitsune teased.
Mutsumi put her fingers to her cheek as a thoughtful look came onto her face. "But isn't taking classes 'work' too?"
"I meant jobs, and it was a joke...."
"Oh, that's right...."
Coming in to the room, Naru sighed and wondered if the graduate student had really missed the point, or was playing around with Kitsune. But since it wasn't important, she brushed it off, and turned her attention to brushing off her clothing. "How do I look?"
"You are looking so pretty, sempai!" Shinobu told her.
"Are you sure? I've got to go see someone about my being a teacher, and so...."
"You're fine. I mean, that skirt and blouse really go together."
"Don't worry about it," Motoko told the newlywed. "I am certain that you will do well in your aims for today."
"So long as no one pops up when I don't expect it," Naru grumbled.
"Ah heh.... Yes, well.... I'm certain that such a thing won't happen."
"Good. But what about you?"
"I've got my own meeting to attend. Apparently one of my advisors wants to talk to me about something."
"It's nothing bad, I hope."
"No. According to the advisor, it's actually because I'm doing well."
"I hope that I can do that well too," Ema murmured as she picked up her bag.
"Oh?"
"Yeah. You see, I hope to get into Tokyo U just like you guys."
"Then you should perk up," Keitaro told her. "If you put your heart into whatever you try, you can accomplish it."
"You think so?"
"I know so. I mean, I got into there myself, didn't I? Just push for it, and you'll succeed before you know it."
"You're right! I'm going to go out and ace all of my exams, paving the way for me to get into Tokyo University!" Ema declared, puffing out her chest as she stood there in her school uniform.
"Good speech, Urashima," Motoko told him.
"Especially since it came from a guy who was a three time loser," Mitsune murmured, with a smirk.
Both Ema and Keitaro deflated at that comment.
Shinobu gave Kitsune a small frown. "Now, remember, he let his dreams carry him to where he wanted to go." "I did, didn't I?" he said with a growing smile.
"Exactly. And don't you have important things to do today?"
"You're right about that. I have my own meeting in.... AHHH! I've got to leave now, or I'll be late!"
The girls all watched him grab his bag, run out of the room, come back in, kiss his wife, and then run out again.
"Some things never change," Motoko muttered.
Kitsune shrugged. "Would you really want them to shift that much?"
"We should be going too," Shinobu reminded them.
That broke Naru out of the little world that her husband's kiss had put her in, and, still blushing, she grabbed her purse as she joined the others in heading out, while:
