He might not be Harry Dresden, but he wasn't exactly a slouch and he wasn't exactly inexperienced. He was, in fact, one of the more powerful wizards alive.
The grey cloak settled onto his shoulders was more of a temporary thing. It was only because of the Red Court vampires that there was a shortage of Wardens and that he was agreeing to assist these other wizards. Vampires were, Anne Rice and other popularists to the side, not particularly nice people.
Tenchi was nearby, learning as he went. It was a good learning experience after all. His grandson was to follow the family tradition of being a powerful priest-mage after all.
He was Katsuhito Masaki, after all.
There was a local wizard, but Runninghorse was almost as young as Tenchi and most definitely not considered to be powerful or experienced enough to be able to handle a dimensional rift as large as this one.
An old pocket watch was consulted. Less than four hours of vigil before the distortion ended. Either something would come through, or it would not. Katsuhito hoped it wasn't some form of oni, or worse yet - Outsiders. Tenchi was getting better but he was a long way from being able to handle anything of that sort.
The Phantom Ranch was not too far away but this petroglyph covered section of rocky arroyo was not particularly interesting if you didn't know its history, and the chance of someone wandering in by accident was very slim. SomeTHING wandering by was slightly more likely - and it was the main reason to keep a vigil going.
