Magitech: Quick Burning Fire [Episode 162922]

by Kender

Akane's voice echoed across the schoolyard, as she stayed crouched there. With her legs spread and tense, and her fingers curled like claws, she looked like some sort of monster in the form of a girl. The shine of intellect had left her eyes, which were now glowing with an inhuman red light. Everything about her said that she was merely violence taken physical form, and was ready to attack.

So, when her howl was ended, and her head came down from its upward tilt, one boy in particular had something to worry about. It wasn't that he was special in any way, shape, or form, but that he was the one that she saw first. He quickly began to regret his participation in the morning attacks on her, as it was now obvious that she was looking to take on people involved with that.

Almost as if she was dismissing the still moaning Kuno, she slowly began to move towards him. In what was almost a bow legged gait, she seemed ready to pounce. Each of her breaths grew to be more ragged than the last, and little twitches gave her even more of an appearance of being 'wild'.

But in one single gasp, all the tension left her body, and she lost whatever it was that was keeping her up. Her eyes returned to normal, as she fell towards the ground like a puppet with its strings cut off. She seemed to have nothing left in her reserves, and all that she could do was let herself go.

The last thing that she saw as she hit the walkway was her friends heading to where she was.

"What do you mean by saying that you were 'right to be concerned'?" Sayuri asked as she turned her attention from where her friend was laying on a bed in the nurse's office.

Miyo dropped the open book that she'd been looking through onto a counter and jabbed a finger at an image inside of it. "This is what I'm talking about. What she has is most certainly /not/ the 'Earth Shattering' rune."

"What is it then?"

"The 'Berserker' rune."

"You mean...." Yuka whispered. "Akane is a...."

"'Berserker'? Yes, she is."

"But why would someone give her a rune that's supposed to make her do... do...." the ponytailed girl asked, unable to finish her question as memories replayed themselves in her head.

"That's just the thing. It's /not/ supposed to be exactly like that."

"But that's what happened."

Her long haired friend nodded. "We saw it."

"What you saw was the effect of an incomplete rune," Miyo told them.

"'Incomplete'?"

"Yes. You see, a 'Berserker' rune is supposed to put someone into a battle frenzy."

"It certainly did that," Sayuri muttered sourly.

"However, the one with it is also supposed to have control over it. They can go and fight only when they want to. It /should/ allow her to limit the time and intensity of her 'berserk' times, and when they happen."

"Then why did she attack Kuno like that?"

"This," Miyo answered, running a fingertip along one part of the image in the book. "This line is what would give her control over it, but there's a problem with it."

"It's not done right?"

"It's not /there/."

"Hold on a second," Yuka murmured, her face drawing into a scowl. "What does that mean for her?"

"To tell the truth? Bad stuff. She'll be a true 'berserker'. Any time an enemy, or a threat, shows up, she'd probably wind up activating the run. In fact, she might even wind up just getting annoyed, and activate it."

"Well then, we have to get it removed! She's our friend, and needs help with this as soon as possible!"

"/Can/ it be removed?" Sayuri asked the closest thing to an expert that they had.

"I have no idea," Miyo sighed, shaking her head in regret, while:
