Friends And Family: Coming Visits [Episode 163370]

by Kender

It was funny how one could quickly fall into being familiar with a situation, or so Ranko thought as she left the washing machine to run through its cycle. When she'd been putting laundry into be cleaned, she realized that some of the laundry was for her brother, who was in school with her two younger stepdaughters. That had led to her thinking about how things tended to be more... noisy when he was around... which made her remember that he hadn't even been in her house for half a week. But she had just fell in to thinking of him being there like he'd always been staying with her, though she did have to admit that it was nice to have him back after such a long trip too.

"Will someone answer that?!" her father called as the phone started ringing.

Of course, there were some aspects of having her family basically together again that she wasn't exactly thrilled with.

Ignoring her father's idiocy for the time being, she headed to answer the phone, not because he complained, but because there was someone who was trying to get in touch with the house. "Hello, Tendo residence."

*"Hello, Ranko-chan!"* chirped the voice on the line.

"Mom! How are you?"

*"I'm fine. But how is... How are...."*

"Ranma's better than fine, Mom."

The breathing from Nodoka's side of the line got quiet. *"He is? He's there?"*

"Came in just like I told you he would."

*"And how is he? I mean... Is he...."*

"Really strong in the Art, totally fit, and is still cute. Can be a bit obnoxious though."

*"Then he's manly?"*

"'Manly'?" the young redhead murmured, unable to keep the amusement out of her voice. "Mom, according to Nabiki and Akane, the girls at the school are just falling for him right and left, and he didn't even try anything. In fact, he doesn't even realize that he's doing it."

*"Oh, I'm so proud!"*

"I thought that you would think so."

*"I was worried that your father might want him to be.... Never mind about that. But it does remind me,"* her mother asked. *"How is your father?"

"He's okay, though one can hope that can get worse from time to time."

*"Ranko! He's your father!"*

"He's also the bonehead who decided that, after bringing my baby brother back after a ten year 'training trip', causing a ruckus in my house at all hours was a good idea."

*"He hasn't changed, has he?"*

"Not in the ways that count," Ranko admitted.

*"Well, I'll straighten him out myself."*

"You will?"

*"I will. You see, I want to come over for a visit...."*

"A visit? The girls will be ecstatic. And Ranma.... He's going to really want to see you," the matron of the Tendo home replied with a smile on her face.

*"I want to see him too.... But don't tell them that I'm coming."*

"Why not? They'll want to get ready."

*"That's just it."*

"What is?"

*"If you don't tell them, then I can surprise them all."*

Ranko thought of her father's likely reaction to her mother 'dropping by' and grinned. "Trust me. Pop'll definitely be surprised."

*"I hope so."*

"I know so."

*"Well then, I'll see you when I get there."*

"See you then," the young woman answered, and hung up the phone, already imagining what this particular visit was going to be like.

The salaryman was an individual of routines. He was someone who did the same thing every day, week after week. There were only slight shifts for weather, seasons, and holidays, but the rest of the time was basically full of days that were similar to each other. That wasn't to say that he was totally bored, as he'd fit in well with his co-workers, and liked having a regular schedule.

But when he saw the ad during his commute to work, he realized that something was up.

On the way between his apartment and the train station was an okonomiyaki restaurant that was a good place to stop in for a quick bite to eat. He did that sometimes, either on his way in to work, or on his way home, and he'd done it often enough to know the chef pretty well. What he'd just read was possibly involving that friendly cook, and so he felt it only right to inform his acquaintance about the few lines. It was too late to do anything that morning, but he knew that he could stop in after work.

After all, he didn't think that there were that many people named 'Ukyo Kuonji' running around.

He tucked that little trip into his schedule, and knew that he'd be able to do what he planned, while:
