Especially in this Strange New Universe she found herself in.
Come on, how many "humans" could this "T'Sera" - who still had some pretty obvious resemblances to one "Tsukino Usagi", oddly enough, even though she was an entirely different species here - have known personally? She was born and raised in a rustic community which was part of the Vulcan Capital only in name, generally, and hadn't gone to any of the prestigious schools or anything, as far as Setsuna could tell. Not so many Outworlders there...
But - No go. There just wasn't enough data for the Gate to get a proper "fix", it seemed.
And when her intuition was all but screaming at her that this person was important, too...
Ahh, well. Things would no doubt improve as she gathered more data, but it would be hard going for a while.
OK, time to try scanning again...
A blue haired girl looked at a woman in a white coat.
The woman looked back.
"The Starfleet Academy? The Starfleet Academy?"
The girl looked at her, unmoving.
"I have passed the entrance exams, Dr Anderson. As well as the other - requirements."
"But... Ami. Ami, Ami, Ami... There are so many other things you could do..."
The girl shrugged.
"Perhaps. But this is what I wish to do. - You said that I should find something I wish to do and do that, did you not?"
"...Ami." The woman groaned, burying in face in her hands."
"Oh, Ami. - I, I came here to tell you I'm going back to my maiden name now. Mizuno."
"...The separation is finalized, then? I see. - Oh. You wish me to change my name, too?"
The woman groaned, again.
"Well yes, I was planning to ask you if you wanted to come with me or your father -"
The girl sighed, then.
"I ... Do not really think of him as a "father", Dr Anderson. Aah, Dr Mizuno. - I would not mind changing my name, if you want me to."
"I...think I do, actually."
"Very well. Shall I be Mizuno Anderson, then?"
"...No, Mizuno Ami. Or Ami Mizuno, if you want, but I like the traditional naming rules better, I'm afraid."
"Mizuno Ami it shall be, then."
The girl smiled, then, though the expression did look rather painted on.
"I have to sign something, do I not? As well as notify the Academy. Though that should be done automatically, I suppose..."
The woman sighed.
"Well, yes. And Ami?"
The girl was silent, then, studying the older woman.
"Ahh. I am sorry. "Mother"."
"...Never mind."
Setsuna rubbed her eyes. Curious.
The girl - Her name had even become "Mizuno Ami" as she watched - Looked a lot like the "Mizuno Ami" she remembered, but...
Hmmmmm.
"You're going where?"
"Staaaaaarfleet. Academyyyyyy."
The girl drawled, long black hair cascading. Her ears were pointed and smooth.
The old man stared. And groaned.
"...Whyyyyyyy?"
"You aren't really worried about him any more, are you? He'll be damn pleased he doesn't have to think about me any more, or even notice my existence. Out of sight, out of mind, you know, and it's hard to be more out of sight then Not On The Same Planet Any More. Not to mention I have half-sibs galore now, most of which don't have the embarrassment potential I do."
"But. But. Reiyaleh..."
"...Grandfather. I have Federation citizenship already. Right?"
"But..."
"Never mind the "buts". My father's career is not going to capsize just because I'm going to Starfleet, alright?"
"...Do you think that's the only thing I'm worried about?"
"Well, no. I'm sure that's the first thing he'll think of, though."
The girl sighed, then.
"Trust me. This will all turn out to the best. ...Even the Fires showed good omens."
And the old man sighed along with her.
Setsuna sighed. Curiouser and curiouser.
Her name was "Reiyaleh" - OK, that was close enough to "Rei", she supposed, and she looked a little bit like a certain "Hino Rei" would have, too - but what was she?
Those ears looked a little like "T'Sera"'s little brother and father's, but -
Hmmmmmmm.
