While a parrot or hawk or eagle had its uses, particularly on Earth where they could fly free, as Hiro he'd probably be expected to go visit his Mom. Who was Minako Aino/Sailor Venus and currently on patrol somewhere out there in outer space.
A cat? Not only no but hell no. Dying had muted down the crap from the nekoken but he still felt a touch of it.
Dog was more tempting. A big old German shepherd or an Akita or something. They could go practically anywhere a human could go and he'd heard of a few martial artists who had animal companions, particularly in legends. That could have been cool.
A purely robotic one, trundling on treads, was possible - but stairs and ladders and the like made for problems there.
So, the easiest was a human configuration.
Robotic innards or android? Android or synthoid or partial synthoid?
Ranma finally decided partial synthoid. Artificial enough to be obviously his personacom (and therefore not have to pay for seperate rooms and stuff) but human enough to not immediately attract bot-haters. Which weren't a problem in space but was a concern on Earth.
It was a good thing he didn't have to pay for one, being related to Ranma and Minako. As the child of two heroes, he got one for free. Very important when you had no current income and the most basic models of personacom ran about the price of a topline refrigerator and the ones he was looking at were either not available or cost more than a typical house if you did rate a personacom or a marionette.
"So what general orientation will be using," asked his guide. "Security, piloting, general purpose-?"
Ranma/Hiro thought about it and decided that with all the talk about a Colony War and stuff, what he could use was:
