Foul sorcery was such a convenient excuse.
The ACME Intellect Enhancer was perfect for his purposes. Not only would it give him the perfect way to defeat foul sorcery and convince Akane to give up her act of shyness, but he wouldn't have to study for the calculus test on Friday!
He didn't know this was a discarded bit of biotech that the Russian sponsors had provided and that the Russians had thrown away like many of their allies' bits - simply because it had side-effects deemed to be worse than the benefits.
Yes, the Russians were dealing with slimy tentacled Monsters From Outer Space. They knew, as did their Western counterparts, higher ranked members of MITHRIL, and other organizations - that sooner or later the aliens would drop their role of hidden puppeteer. Nobody really trusted their alien 'benefactors' and so bits and pieces were "leaked" to various groups.
The ACME Intellect Enhancer was a vaguely organic hat with a large lightbulb on the top, a knife switch, various smaller lights which would blink in sequence, and some tiny little needles in recesses around the brim.
Knowing that this would make midterms and his acquisition of Akane easier, Tatewaki Kuno put it on, and pulled the knife switch.
The needles sank into his flesh, causing Kuno to try and pull the fool thing off.
Kuno ran around the room, screeching in pain, not knowing what it was doing.
In truth, it WOULD enhance his intellect. It also made him completely fluent in:
Botswanian (the planet, not the country)
Chinese
Russian
Tagalog
Urda
Technobabble
English
and the warbling of the highcrested loon.
As he tried to wrench it off, his mathematical proficiency levels skyrocketed.
As he tried to pry at the rim, he found his obsession level actually increasing with regards to his main obsession. Namely capturing Akane Tendo.
As he ran around crying for Sasuke, Tatewaki Kuno was struck with the compressed knowledge of the mating practices of the highcrested loon, Chinese Amazons, Rigellian suckerfish, and koi breeding.
Even as it was downloading information to him, it was also downloading information on the enemies of the Russians. Specifically robotics and other devices that an operative might uncover. These were then sent on from the Enhancer to Tatewaki's brain. His own frantic thoughts, fantasies, and perversions were interpreted as requests for information which were sent off, received, and responded to.
Finally, one of Tatewaki's clawing hands hit the knife switch and turned the device off.
