Dragon Tribe, those whose ancestry hearkened to one or the other of the powerful Dragons (as opposed to their lesser spawn who were merely dragons), was independent of either Court - though often sought by members of one Court or another. They didn't join the Court so much as join the carnage when the fighting was going on.
So a new coming-into-his-power, member of the Dragon Tribe was bound to get noticed sooner or later.
The boy was taller than Kasumi, broadshouldered and powerfully built yet lithe and quick looking. His golden eyes seemed to draw the viewer in, or so Kasumi quickly came to realize.
Nabiki preferred bishonen sorts, vaguely feminine and cute, and Ranma was not that. Nor was he rich. He DID seem to have a certain barely-leashed raw power going for him that she found attractive.
Akane had been ready to lash out at any pervert = boy, but so far he hadn't done much except look hurt somehow.
"...and so if you marry one of them, the future of the Anything Goes is secure," said Soun.
"Hmmm? Say what?" asked Ranma, "you got to be kidding me. Ya want me to marry someone I never saw before today? When stupid Pops never even mentioned this before either?!"
"It happens all the time," said Soun Tendo, trying to look Buddha-wise. "It is a matter of family honor."
"Feh, I suppose," said Ranma, still dealing with the unfamiliar depression. "What do THEY think about this?"
"I'M NOT MARRYING SOME STUPID BOY!" exclaimed Akane.
"Younger men are so... young," said Kasumi almost apologetically.
"You got any money?" asked Nabiki.
"Don't sound like your daughters are sold on the deal either," said Ranma, trying to think of an out. "If it's uniting the schools, maybe I could just teach your student?"
"Ridiculous," said Soun.
"Preposterous," said Genma.
"Like you could teach me anything!" sniffed Akane.
"Okay, let's have a little sparring match to determine how 'preposterous' it is," said Ranma, getting up. That outbuilding in the backyard looked like the dojo.
"That wasn't what I thought was preposterous," protested Genma. "Taking a pupil won't assure the continuance of the school."
"I need to work off some stress anyway, Oyaji," said Ranma with a savage grin.
