Several years ago...
Flashes of images appeared in the dreams of the little Pokémon, slumbering in the depths of the lake.
Was it only a dream? Or perhaps memories of a previous, more happy life?
She could see images of a palace... Yes, an ancient kingdom. This was where she once... lived? She could also see the image of a young man, a human, dressed in what she remembers to be armor.
But herself... her memories weren't that clear about herself... Was she a Pokémon that once lived in this kingdom, being befriended by that human and helping him in battle? Or was she a human as well? She could see flashes of her human appearance: A beautiful, young girl dressed completely in white, with golden hair that cascaded down her shoulders in two remarkable pigtails...
But, then again, it got replaced with her normal Pokémon form: A small, pink-furred mammal with a long tail, floating in the air by using its psychic abilities...
Who had she been? Human? Or Pokémon?
----
Slowly, her eyes opened.
"Mew..."
That was a strange dream... She could almost remember every single part of it...
Well, time to get up...
The pink bubble in which she had slept slowly rose to the surface. When it was hovering over the smooth lake, it popped, and Mew floated freely in the air.
Time to find some breakfast...
----
The Amazon Jungle... A thick and lush forest full with life. Trees, colorful flowers and countless types of other plants were growing to create a habitat for millions of Pokémon.
Butterfrees were fluttering over the big flowers. Mankeys were swinging from tree to tree. Pinsirs were crawling on the thick trunks of the trees, and every now and then, a Rhydon was moving its massive body through the thicket.
But today, Pokémon weren't the only living beings in this area of the jungle.
Slowly, a group of humans was searching for a way through the trees, making way by using sharp machetes.
Mew stopped munching on her berries when she heard the approaching humans. Curiously, she tilted her head. What were they doing here?
Using her psychic abilities, she scanned their minds. Then she realized: They were searching... for her?
Quickly, she zipped out of sight to hide under some bushes. In her haste, she almost flew inside a thorny bush. She could stop herself in time, but her fur got caught in the thorns.
Angrily, she pulled. "Mew, Meeeew..." Ouch! She was able to pull free, but a single patch of her fur got stuck to the thorns. Quickly, she vanished under the bushes.
Some time later, the humans appeared at the same place.
One of them looked around. "I thought I heard something..." he murmured. Then, his eyes fell on the thorny bush.
"Professor," he shouted. "Come quick! I found a patch of fur."
Another man, wearing a pair of glasses, hasted to his side. "Perhaps it's just what we're looking for," he said in excitement. "Wait, we'll take it with us. Back at the camp, I can analyze it..."
Mew watched in bewilderment as the humans took the fur and put it in some plastic bag. Why were they so excited about a patch of her fur? She didn't understand it...
Well, it was a rare occurrence that humans came into the jungle. She was interested in their way of living. And she was extremely curious about their intentions. Perhaps she should follow them...?
----
When the small group returned to their campsite, the Professor instantly took the plastic bag with the fur and took it into the tent in which he had set up a small laboratory.
"This is so exciting," he whispered to himself. "If this is really what we're looking for... we'll be able to clone the most powerful Pokémon that ever lived... Mew!"
Just then, the tent rustled as someone came in. "Papa, you're back! Can we play now?"
Professor Tomoe sighed. "Hotaru, I'm very busy right now. We just found something very important in the jungle. Maybe later, okay?"
"Oh..." Hotaru really sounded disappointed. "Okay..."
When his daughter left the tent, the Professor shook his head. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to take her along... But then again, when she was begging for it, he could hardly say no, could he?
----
Hotaru wandered through the camp. The violet-haired girl knew her Papa was a very busy man, but she was sad that he had so little time for her... And it was boring here. Sure, the jungle was pretty... But she really had nothing to do. And the others wouldn't let her leave the camp because it was too dangerous.
If she only had a friend to play with...
When she came close to the edge of the camp, she thought she heard a voice.
"Hello?"
Just then, a pink shape came floating out of the bushes.
"Mew!"
'Hello!'
Hotaru blinked. She knew she heard the Pokémon call its name... but did she just imagine it or did it say 'hello' afterwards?
"Um, did you just say something?"
'Sure! I talked to you in your mind. I think you humans call it 'telepathy'. What's your name?'
"I'm Hotaru... Hotaru Tomoe! Are you a Pokémon?"
'Sure am! I'm a Mew!' She made a small loop in mid-air.
Hotaru giggled. "You're cute... Do you have a name?"
'No, not really... I'm the only Mew that's living here, and all of the other Pokémon just called me 'Mew' when I talked to them.'
"Don't you have any parents?"
Mew sadly looked down. "Meeew..."
'I... can't remember them. I think they left me when a was very small...'
"Oh... I'm sorry to hear that! Where did they go?"
Mew sighed and looked up at the sky that was shimmering through the thick leaves. 'To a place far, far away...'
Hotaru smiled at the little Mew. "I like you! Wanna be friends?"
Mew landed on Hotaru's head and hugged it. "Meeeew!"
'Yes, I'd like that very much!'
"Then we have to think of a name for you, right? Let me think of one..." She thought about it for a while. Then she snapped her fingers. "I know... Let's call you 'Usagi'."
'Usagi?'
"Yes, that means 'rabbit'."
Mew giggled. 'But Hotaru... I'm a cat Pokémon, you know?'
"Well, maybe... But if you had longer ears and a shorter tail, you would look almost like a pink rabbit."
'Usagi...' Mew thought about it, then giggled. 'I like it!'
