Ryoko Mitsurugi wasn't all that anxious to fight a lot of people, but DID think that it was the best test of skills available for her. The last official kendo match she'd faced some idiot calling himself 'Shooting Star' who had made KUSANAGI look good if only in comparison.
Ranma wasn't the Prince of the high school that all the young girls tended to moon over. There was another boy (in Ryoko's opinion - moron was a more applicable descriptor) who fit that description more readily.
Ranma, however, had access to magic. Not used very often, not used very flashy, but a number of people had seen him use those cards of his before. While some guys had come up with the usual disgusting suggestions about how they'd misuse such things (and immediately learned that a number of the girls of this school had access to either powerful martial arts or magic or esper abilities or something), Ranma had clearly thought the idea itself was just plain nuts.
Since then one of the girls in 3C had put together details somehow and let it get out. Since she was pretty darn accurate normally - people listened to her.
Ranma was apparently exhausting himself trying to free these girls from their prisons. THAT cut him a lot of slack from teachers, fellow students, and the female constituents of the school.
So Ryoko had NOT challenged Saotome, since the boy was tired out, but if he was ever up to it - she'd measure her skills against his. She, and a few others, would also keep an eye on him so that those 'hormonally addled' boys didn't give Ranma any ideas.
She wasn't the only one, of course. There were others who eyed him as a potential sparring partner but gave him some room as someone struggling with a private battle. Even those two new twits, Bob Makihara and whats-his-name. Spiky hair. Those two didn't go after him.
"Attention all students," said the principal's voice over the intercom. "There is a large heavyset balding man in a white gi who has offered to take on all challengers. The prize for defeating him is a semester-long set of lunch tickets usable at the cafeteria. Have a nice day."
Ryoko raised an eyebrow. The cafeteria here had some pretty good cooks, not the sort of institutional slop you might normally expect. Hmmmm.
