Nabiki slid the door closed behind her. Had she timed her exit correctly?
She only had to pose for a few seconds, though. The teenage boy and his father were now looking towards the door. She picked up her small, parasol-like umbrella, checked to see if her small sling purse was in place, and then clopped out on her geta-s. She was the very picture of an old-fashioned girl in her spring kimono.
"Oh! Hello," Ranma said.
"Hello. Have you come to see my family? I'm Nabiki Tendo," she bowed.
"Oh, yeah." Ranma.
"My name is Genma Saotome, and this is my son, Ranma," Genma said, bowing.
"Nabiki...Say, ain't that the name of the girl I'm supposed to be engaged to?"
"Engaged to?"
"Ranma!" his father rebuked his boorish son. But to his surprise, the girl put her arm in the boy's.
"Why don't we talk it over? I think a girl is owed a date, before she agrees to be engaged."
"Date?" Ranma hadn't expected anything like that. He thought it would be more cut-and-dry than that. They would go to the house, the engagement formally made, and that would be it; he would live with the girl with her family, and they would get to know each other, living something like a married couple, except without the stuff a real one needed a license for. He was beginning to feel trapped. "Say, uh, ain't it a schoolday, or something?"
