"A magic spell?" Asuka fumed. "You mean to tell me I've acted like this because you BRAINWASHED me?"
Shinji back off, nervously. "Well, Asuka-chan... it was only as a little experiment, you see? A little sacrifice for science..."
"I'll show you science!" the redhead snarled and ran after Shinji with an enormous mallet (property of Akane Tendo... please return after using it).
"Please, we don't have time for this," Misato stopped the two teenagers. "And Shinji, while this had been the best laugh I had in my whole life, and I am really grateful for that... you can't just go around and test your little spells on every person that crosses your way."
"Sorry..." Shinji said from under a mallet.
"Major Katsuragi... surely you don't believe in magic, do you?" a certain blue-furred cat asked.
Misato sighed. "Look, Rei... I really didn't believe it before this day, but... take a look at yourself! You're the one with a tail in this apartment, are you not?"
Neko-Rei looked down at herself. "This could be... just an illusion. A hallucination, caused by some sort of gas... or even Angel contamination."
"Believe me, no Angel is supposed to turn you into something like this," Misato said. "And I really think you shouldn't run back to headquarters and tell the commander... I really don't want to know how he would react to this."
"Okay, that's all fine," Asuka intervened. "The question is: What are we going to do that wonder-kitty turns back into wondergirl?"
"I looked... into the chapter of anti-magic..." Shinji groaned and took his book. "And I believe there is a potion that can reverse all kinds of magical transformations. We just need some ingredients."
"And just what kind of ingredients are that?" Asuka grumbled. "Toad's eye and newt's tail? Never mind, gimme that..." And she tried snatching the book out of Shinji's grasp.
Only to get hit with a nasty shock.
"GYAAAAAH! Ouch! What the heck was that?"
Shinji grinned. "I tried to warn ya... this book protects itself against anyone who isn't supposed to touch it."
"You wanna tell me that dumb book recognizes you as its 'master'? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard..."
Misato coughed. "Well, back to the main topic... Shinji, just what do we need for that potion of yours?"
"Not much we couldn't buy in a store," Shinji said while reading. "Oh, we also need a pattern of the animal I've turned Rei into... and her own fur won't work."
"That all?" Asuka asked. "We just have to go on the street and search for some alley cat and take some of its hairs, right?"
"Well, of course we should make sure that it is the right species," Misato pointed out. Then she took a look at Rei. "Now what kind of cat could you be?"
Rei looked down at her fur. "Russian Blue?"
"I don't think so, wonder-kitty," Asuka said. "I don't think normal cats have something like this on their forehead..."
And she gestured to the crescent-shaped mark on Rei's head.
Misato frowned. "I've never seen anything like that before..."
"That's no problem," Shinji said. "I have a nice spell that can tell me what kind of cat Rei is... It's a spell to analyze life forms, category 'Perception'..."
"Nu-uh!" Asuka shook her head. "Forget it! No magic for you today, mister!"
"Asuka..." Misato gently took her arm. "If we are to find out how to help Rei, we have to trust Shinji's magical abilities... after all, his book wouldn't be of any use to either of us, right?"
"Okay..." Asuka sighed. "I guess you're right... But I'm not as half as convinced about his abilities as you are, Misato! Okay then, 'Mr. Magic'... do your stuff!"
"Okay," Shinji nodded. Now, careful... He clearly didn't want to screw this one up as well...
Shinji put his hands behind his ears and murmured the phrase: "EXPOSAMI CREATUR!"
Then he gasped, as a flood of information invaded his brain. "Oh, wow..." he muttered. "Now that's a rush..."
"Well, did it work?" Asuka asked.
"What kind of cat am I?" Rei wanted to know as well.
Shinji blinked. "Actually, you are... an alien species of cat, from the planet Mau."
"An alien CAT?" Asuka asked in a disbelieving voice. "You GOTTA be kidding me..."
"No, I'm not," Shinji replied. "But, the spell also told me that the cats from this planet are extinct for a while now... we wouldn't find any of that kind, even if we would find a way to travel to that planet."
"Are you implying there... might not be a way to turn me back?" Rei asked, with only a hint of unease in her voice.
Suddenly, Misato snapped her fingers. "Of course! Now I remember where I've seen something similar before..."
"What do you mean?" asked Asuka.
"That crescent mark... Some weeks ago, I read an old report about strange 'magical girls' that had appeared in Tokyo, before the First Impact had happened... They have been called 'Sailor Senshi', if I'm correct... And I remember reading that they always had some sort of talking cats with them... cats with a crescent mark on their forehead!"
