Neko-Rei was running down the street. The under normal circumstances emotionally calm girl turned feline was in a state of total confusion... All of her life, her decisions have been made by pure logic, without letting getting mislead by unnecessary emotions.
But now, trapped in a four-legged body, sucked through an energy vortex caused in no explicable methods, and dumped in an unknown city, her mind was unable to cope with this amount of illogical information... and that made her freak.
Unable to think clearly, she only knew that she just couldn't listen anymore... She couldn't stand hearing how casual Major Katsuragi and her fellow Eva pilots were talking about something like magic... something that shouldn't scientifically possible.
After having run for some time, she forced herself to stop and think. Panting hardly, she took a look around. But this place was unfamiliar to her, and all streets looked the same to her, so she didn't know which way to go.
She tried remembering her lessons at school, where they talked about the Tokyo of the past... But even if this actually WAS the year 1998, she couldn't find anything that helped her further.
"Excuse me, but do I know you?"
It was a high voice, sounding like that of a child, but Rei was that deep in thought that it took her by surprise. She jumped and quickly turned around.
A young kitten with grey fur that was wearing a bell around her neck was sitting in front of her and... smiled?
At first Rei was confused, but then she saw the crescent moon mark on the kitten's forehead. Was that one of those 'Mau' Shinji-kun had mentioned?
"I don't think we've ever met before," the kitten continued in her voice that sounded exactly like that of a human girl. "I always thought my Mom and Dad were the only mooncats living in this tim... I mean, in Juuban!" she hastily corrected herself. Then she smiled again. "My name is Diana! And who are you?"
Rei unconsciously sat down on her haunches before replying: "Rei..."
"Really?" Diana asked. "One of my human friends is called Rei... do you know her? She's a Shinto priestess at the Hikawa shrine. She's always nice to me, although she often yells at Usagi... but that's only because she's always reading Rei's mangas without her permission. Well, if I would own any manga, I would probably be as upset as her... Actually, I don't like reading much, it's so difficult for us cats to turn a page. I prefer playing with balls of yarn, or with Luna-P, if Small Lady lets me... do you have a hobby?"
All that came out of the little kitten's muzzle at an astounding rate of speed. Rei shook her head as she tried to process everything Diana told her within her confused tiny cat brain.
"You know, logically speaking... both of us shouldn't really be able to speak at all..." she then said in a calm voice, much calmer than her state of mind was right now.
"Really?" Diana asked and tilted her head. "Well, I don't know much about the whys and hows... you should ask Ami for that... but I do know that not all cats are able to speak like us." She grinned proudly. "My Mom once tried to tell me why us mooncats are so different from other cats, but I really didn't understand at all... But that's not important, right? I mean, it's not necessary knowing why you can do something if you know that you CAN do it, right?"
Rei had to think about that. Somehow, that young kitten, in all her naivety, sounded wiser and more intelligent than any scientist she had met at NERV, including Dr. Akagi.
Just then, her grumbling stomach drew her attention off from those thoughts.
"It appears I am in need of some food," the blue-furred cat stated with a sigh. "Could you show me where to gather some?"
Diana giggled. "You have a funny way of talking... But sure, I know where to get some food. Come on, it's this way!"
And she ran ahead of Rei, her little bell jingling.
