Rei 8-O9E was the ninth of fifty clonegirls, E variant which referred to the fact that she was trained as a "girl friday". Her psychic talents, which she and the others kept hidden from They Who Watched and the darker groups beyond that - were fairly limited at present.
The other one developing beyond the original specifications was Rei 8-01B. Her existence was considerably less pleasant. B variant - battler.
Two weeks previously:
"You say this girl is a fighter?" asked Tatewaki Kuno.
"Yes, she has considerable training and expertise," said the slavetrader. "We obtained her when her previous owner met an unfortunate accident."
"An accident you say?" asked Kuno.
"Yes, some Yakuza fellow," said the slavetrader. "He kept a pit of crocodiles around apparently because he saw it in some film and liked the effect. Apparently at some point he tripped and fell in himself."
"Indeed?" asked Kuno. "How careless."
"Yes, but lucky for you," said the slavetrader. "Because you wanted a fighting girl, and boy is she THAT!"
The girl in question glanced at her seller, but no emotion was shown despite their discussion of her fate.
"How so?" asked Tatewaki Kuno, seeing no fire or fighting spirit to indicate that.
"She's been trained to be a Yakuza enforcer, merciless and very precisely violent," said the slavetrader.
"Hmmmm," said Tatewaki Kuno. Now that it had been pointed out, he could see the dispassionate coldness in the girl's eyes. For such a one, a fight was not something to burn hot about - but to go cooly and directly towards the destruction of one's enemies.
The slavetrader wanted to make this sale. This girl creeped him out seriously. She could NOT be responsible for the sudden deaths to plague his other stock, she had been manacled to the wall. Still, death followed this Rei unit - whatever the cause it was quite simple that deaths occurred wherever Rei 801-B lingered.
"I might have use of such a one," admitted Kuno. The girl was attractive in her own way but there was something of the serpent about her. "Yet I have my eye on other toys more likely to be receptive of mine ardor."
"Perhaps we can make a deal," said the slavetrader.
Tatewaki Kuno knew that Rei was nearby. It was the way the fish hid in the bottom of the pond. The way the birds fell silent. The way his maids in attendance started looking for hiding places.
"Report," said Kuno.
"Your test score has been raised," said Rei.
"Excellent," said Kuno. "It would not do for the rising star of Furinkan to settle for such a low score."
Rei said nothing else, feeling the reverberation from another of her series dying. Eventually she would gather enough power to avenge herself on these humans. They would all suffer.
"Rei, you are not wearing the proper clothing," said Kuno. "Go change."
Yes, thought Rei to herself, they would all suffer before they could escape in death.
