"That could be it," Hotaru admitted, putting her hands palm down onto the table and shrugging. "I don't know much about the Federation itself, but there are plenty of stories...."
"Hey, even a rumor can be useful, right?"
"That's true, but it's not always the best idea...."
"I just want an idea of who I'm dealing with. When I need details, I'll go to the Maid of Information," her lord told her.
"I understand. Well, I do know that they look a lot like us, and fly around in ships that are supposed to look like birds."
"'Birds'?"
She lifted her arms, held her hands behind her, and stuck her chin out. "'Birds'. They have big saucers on long necks with two tubes on arms on their backsides. At least, the one that's coming to us does."
"Seems like a weird way to make a ship."
"Who knows why they like it, but they seem to. They look a lot like us though. The major groups in it, I mean. They have two legs, two arms, and a head."
"No tentacles?"
"Not as far as I know."
"Good," he sighed, shaking his head ruefully. "That'd freak Minako out something awful if they did."
"Well, they might know some creature that does have it. They seem to poke their noses all over the place, exploring, and trying to 'help'."
"They want to 'help'?"
"Everyone they meet. As I hear it, they keep on poking into things when they want to 'fix' a problem. Not all the time, and not everyone, but they do look to be having a lot of people who will try to help no matter what happens," the ninja maid commented.
"Just great. A bunch of goodie two shoes. Are they the sort who thinks that they 'know better', or are they actually just trying to be a help?"
"A little of both, I think. It seems to have caused them some problems too. But they will try to fix what one of their own might mess up."
"Sounds like a hassle," Ranma grumbled, running a hand through his hair. "Don't we have anything that'll tell us something about them that won't blow up in my face?"
"They like to talk, and only fight when they face trouble. They have a lot of treaties, and let planets join them because they want to, not through force or arrangements."
"No offers like the ones from the Klingons?"
Hotaru nodded, knowing just how much her Master disliked those sorts of arrangements. "There won't be a general who likes you so much from the info that he'll suggest that you marry his daughter. At least, I don't think that there will be."
"How wonderful...."
"There is one good thing. As far as I understand it, the Federation seems to have a lot of luck, and the ship that's coming this way is supposed to have a devil's own luck. There's a lot of stories running around James T. Kirk."
"Hold on a second. Did you say 'Kirk'? You mean the guy who supposedly won a fight against someone from the Amazons?"
"Oh, yes...." she murmured, her eyes widening with a sudden realization. "That is him."
"Ah, I understand now."
"You do?"
"Of course," Ranma confirmed, clapping his hands together three times before bowing his head.
"What was that for?"
"Praying for his sake. I already know what he's probably got coming to him."
"Ah, yes...." Hotaru whispered, remembering her master's own encounters and situation with the Amazons, while:
