He could see the other passengers reacting to Ranma by drawing back away from the two.

One was looking at a display, and when he turned his attention to it Genma could see why it was so fascinating. It displayed a temperature and it was dropping.

Ranma gasped, drawing a breath and breaking whatever concentration he was doing. The cold stopped.

"Come on, Ranma," said Genma, snagging up his child with one hand and exiting the bus as soon as the door opened. He knew that drawing attention to yourself was generally a bad thing.

Behind him:

• the Big Brother spyeyes in the bus had already relayed that something unusual had occurred.
• "that was a mutant, right?"
  "Guess so."
  "Poor kid. My cousin went through something similar. Be a couple of weeks trying to get control of their powers and such."
  "Yeah. Rough time, I hear."
• "Wow. Suppose that was one of the genemods?"
  "Awfully young to be an Imperial Elite Soldier."
  "Well, ya got to start sometime, I suppose."
• "what the heck was that?"
  "I dunno, I'm still looking for the camera. I'm guessing it's another lame 'reality TV' show and they're looking to freak ordinary types out."
