"Look, you get involved in these things anyway, right?" asked Misato, sitting back against the desk.
"Well, yeah," admitted Umino with a glance towards Naru.
"I think this is the second season or so," said Misato, apparently to herself. "At least that fits your ages right now."
"'Second season'?" asked Naru.
"Never mind, just an old anime I watched when I was a kid," said Misato. "Anyway, that's why I got you two here so I could make the offer. If you're going to get involved in this stuff anyway, why not take advantage of it?"
"...but I don't want to BE a Dark General," said Naru.
"No, didn't think you would," admitted Misato. "That's why we're offering the position to Gurio here. And it's not Dark General, more like Dark Major, Technical Division."
"Do I get paid?" asked Umino.
"Yeah," said Misato. "The Overlord conjured up some magic items and gold and stuff. We got enough of these to pay wages. You get one of these a month."
Umino handed the stone off to Naru, who inspected it. "This is... a sapphire?"
"Yeah," said Misato. "You're only part-time you know. There's health benefits, a 401K plan we're drawing up, educational benefits to help pay for college tuition and stuff. Things like that. We're definitely EOE too."
"But I don't have any Dark General powers," protested Umino. "Err, Dark Major powers."
"Not necessary," said Misato. "Your main job will be keeping an eye on some less trustworthy elements in our own organization. Plus upkeep on the giant robots, making sure the giant monsters get fed, and so on."
"Giant robots?" asked Umino.
"Giant monsters?" asked Naru.
"Yeah, we got giant robots, and we got kaiju," said Misato. "Though the kaiju are kinda wimpy. I think the boss just came to the conclusion that he had to have giant monsters because it was some kinda job requirement."
Ranma glanced at the Giant Monster Pen. "Well, that's kinda... sad."
Rei #2 glanced at one of the two new out-buildings and shrugged. "Monster rampages are perfectly in genre."
"Yeah, and I didn't actually want anyone to get hurt by 'em," said Ranma defensively. Then he turned sad again as he looked down at them again. "Pretty pathetic, right?"
"The Phoenix Mountain group is attacking the tower," stated Rei #2. "Shall we defend ourselves?"
"Go for it," said Ranma. "I've only got an hour and a half left to finish up."
Rei #2 flipped open her cell phone and made the call.
