KLONG! went some unidentified metal implement as it bounced off K'ord's head.
"Father! Where did you hear about that?!" KLONG KLANG KLING KRANG!
"Is that Mrs McCoy?" Kirk asked Sulu.
Hikaru Sulu looked at his Captain, looked at the Doctor, then nodded once.
"Bones, you sly dog, she's got to be half your age," said Kirk, amused for the moment.
"Indeed, Doctor, if I understand the customs correctly," said Spock, "I believe congratulations are in order."
"Don't even start," Doctor McCoy said to Mr. Scott before the engineer could put his own two cents in.
"That doesn't hurt, you know," said K'ord, eyeing his daughter even with the now deformed metal tray resting atop his head.
"Dearest!" said the woman, tossing the tray to the side.
"Ah, hello," said Doctor McCoy.
Lieutenant Sulu considered for a moment then whispered. "Kahneh."
"Kahneh!" responded Doctor McCoy. "You're... looking well."
"Ah," said Kahneh. "Still shy, I see."
"Well, I've got to get back to sickbay," said Doctor McCoy.
"What is 'shy'?" asked K'ord, holding up a book and thumbing through it.
"A quaint human custom," explained Kahneh. "It required considerable viewing of terrestrial drama series for me to grasp the concept."
"Ah," said K'ord. "I'll take your word for it then. Anyway, Kirk, I just wanted you to know that anything that occurs regarding this system business is entirely professional and not at all personal."
"System?" asked Kirk. "Meaning Takahashi Alpha?"
"Of course," gruffed K'ord. "A mere single system, and hardly worth quibbling over. Though my superiors felt differently, sending the fastest ship in the Klingon Armada to run support duties."
"Ah," said Captain Kirk, aware that K'ord had 'let slip' an important detail but not sure of its relevance.
"Hmmm," hmmmed K'ord. "Is that the young princeling's yacht?"
"Yes, he's to be serving onboard as a liason or something, as I understand it," admitted Kirk. "One of the twelve ruling families or something like that."
"Ah," said K'ord. "Perhaps we should arrange something like that between OUR nations. I believe I know someone who would be willing to be an 'ambassador' to you, who is on my ship."
KLANG!
"Too subtle?" K'ord asked his daughter, ignoring the new dent in the tray.
"We're being hailed," said Uhura. "Long distance transmission. It's..."
Everyone (including K'ord and Kahneh on the viewscreen), looked towards Uhura's position. The way she'd trailed off that word kicked in everyone's curiosity.
"Not HER is it?" asked Ensign Hibiki. "Isn't my shift over? Where's Chekov?"
Kirk looked over his "new" subordinate. He didn't remember an Ensign Hibiki. He wasn't quite human from the look of him. Some sort of bandana, which might be a cultural thing and therefore not against regulations. He had fangs, which showed when he was talking or grimacing. He was doing that right now.
"The transmission," said Uhura, "was garbled, but it mentioned something about 'Mister Alien'."
"...how the heck did she find me?" asked Ensign Hibiki, looking for a moment as if he was about to cry.
"It seems that this new timeline has 'girl troubles' as a prominent feature," remarked Spock.
"Aye," agreed Scotty, wondering if HE had something like that going on.
"The Saotome shuttle is almost here," said Lieutenant Sulu. "Main ship is readying for return to Takahashi IIIB."
"I'll consider your kind offer," said Captain Kirk to K'ord, "however I have to await reaction from MY superiors before anything like that happens. Meanwhile it seems that the longer we tarry, the more crowded this area of space will become."
"why me?" quietly asked Ensign Hibiki. "Why is it always me? Just one wrong turn on a planet..."
"only one?" asked Lieutenant Sulu in an equally hushed tone.
"That's a big shuttle," said K'ord.
"It acts as a mobile office and ambassadorial suite," explained Lieutenant Sulu, knowing by now that his captain also needed some expository dialogue. "We've already cleared space in the shuttle bay for it."
"Yes, well, Captain, I'll let you get back to your business," grumped K'ord. "If that blip on my distance sensors is any indication, we'll be having an interstellar conference at this rate."
"Confirmed sir," said Lieutenant Sulu. "Another ship is entering the system."
