Sayuri Saono was likewise a technically correct but uninspired cook. Her skills were mainly in accounting, household budgeting, and such - which she was confident could eventually get her a Class B rating after some college level courses if she pursued such. Sayuri was learning some other talents, her first few attempts at knitting had garnered odd results. She'd made a sweater with one sleeve three feet longer than the other, for example.
Yuka had chosen to try and develop some skills in practical magic, which she had been tested for and found to have some slight talent. Not a great deal of power, and her control would never qualify as great, but she could potentially tap into some of it.
Yuka's current reading dealt with things that didn't have a whole lot of power needed for it. Teas to restore energy or weaken malign spirits. Wardings that would indicate the passage of those bearing supernatural taint. Fortune telling via a number of methods, all of which were vague results but targetted for different needs. One didn't do the sheep-entrail method unless one were looking for society-wide prognostication, for example.
There was ONE bit of magic that Yuka focussed on because it seemed that she might be able to get this one spell down correctly and not go terribly wrong. While spellcasting itself was uncommon, people who could master a single spell were the greatest number within that group. Kunoichi, for example, who could manage a decent Cloak. Miko (shrine priestesses) who could do spirit-wards quite well.
Yuka had quickly determined that she was NOT a summoner. Her attempt to summon a concealing cloud of mist (kumo) had instead managed a rain of spiders (also 'kumo') and similar results. No, the single spell she'd so far been able to get mostly right was:
