“Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!”
Uzumaki Naruto tried and failed to suppress a foxy grin. Damn, that felt good to hear in stereo. So what if he couldn’t do a stinking regular Bunshin? Now he could pass the Genin Test anyway – and use the clone to knock out any jackass who tried to get in his way!
But why stop there? The scroll Mizuki-sensei had told him about was huge, bigger around than anything the Academy had in its library – not that anybody had ever let him get past the doorway of it. The more jutsus he learned now, the faster he could get promoted, and start taking missions on his own. Knowing Iruka-sensei, they’d probably make him team up with that jackass Sasuke as a Genin. Naruto couldn’t grasp the concept of quantum mechanics – indeed, he had trouble pronouncing just the name. But he could pantomime the hand seals and visualize himself reciting the quantum formulas.
In another universe, perhaps, someone might have arrived fast enough to distract him and stop the process. But Mizuki was nowhere to be found, having fallen in with the mob in front of the Hokage’s office; unable to break off himself for fear of giving his plan away. Iruka, too, was missing; trying to track Naruto by following Mizuki had led him to the mob scene as well. The Third himself could have found Naruto at that moment in his crystal ball, had he not been outside trying to calm his people.
So it was that nobody was there to stop Naruto from attempting the Hiraishin no Jutsu and:
