Setsuna was terrified by the latest turn of events, but forged bravely forward. ‘When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream, and shout,’ was probably not the most appropriate advice for the moment, however tempting gibbering cowardice might be. So she went with, ‘honesty is the best policy,’ instead and told the unvarnished truth. Well, not the whole truth, admittedly, but nothing but the truth. She kept it simple.
“Last night’s ah, celebration, seems to have jogged our memories, Lady Nodoka,” Setsuna explained. “We’re all feeling a little disorientated and confused after waking up in Ranma’s bed-room and remembering things from before the Collapse. You understand?”
Nodoka nodded her understanding and latched onto the important detail. “You woke up in Ranma’s bed!?”
“Some of us,” Setsuna agreed with a shrug. “After the ball we all gathered in the parlor for a break from dancing and we all fell…”
“…in love with my manly son after a night of romance!” squealed Nodoka with girlish delight.
“…asleep on the spot,” Setsuna explained under Nodoka’s scream. “Anyway, you can see why suddenly recovering from amnesia and waking up to… it left these two… ah… I’m sure they didn’t mean any harm. They were just taking er…” Perspiration condensed on Setsuna’s brow as she tried to think of a reasonable excuse that wouldn’t end up with Haruka and Michiru being –reeducated– on the spot..
“Well, yes, of course,” Nodoka agreed tolerantly. “But jealousy is no excuse for bad manners! I’m sure my manly son will find time to see to all his maids’ needs and make sure none of them lack for attention.”
“Uh, sure,” Ranma agreed under her meaningful glance. “I’ll, uhm, do my very best.”
“And you’ll make sure they all get along and help each other out when you can’t be with them?” Nodoka insisted.
“Uh, huh,” Ranma nodded and smiled agreeably.
“Pst! What’s Momma Nodoka talking about?” Hotaru whispered to Ranma.
“No idea,” Ranma whispered back. “Just nod and smile.” He cleared his throat. “Oh, yes, Momma. I’ll make sure to make time to train them all, and give it to them hard.” He understood that, at least.
“Excellent,” Nodoka gloated. “Still, kidnapping innocent maids for licentious purposes might be innocent fun, but disrupting a romantic picnic breakfast and a perfectly baked Dutch apple pie cannot be forgiven! In the name of justice, they simply must be punished!”
“Urh, what do you have in mind, Lady Nodoka?” Setsuna asked nervously and thought quickly. “They’re lord Ranma’s responsibility so shouldn’t he be the one to…?”
‘Thank you,’ Ranma mouthed at her in sarcastic silence, ‘thank you, very much.’
“Indeed!” Nodoka gleamed at the suggestion. “It is time he learned to dispense proper punishment and discipline his wayward maids. However, until he can teach them proper manners, —”
