Her issue was with the boy that she had felt deeply for ever since she'd met him. She might have been a class rep who was supposed to be constantly in control and dignified, but she had fallen head over heels for him. For a long time, she'd tried to work up the courage to tell him how she felt, but could never actually manage it... though there was this one dream of her doing so next to a lake that felt so real.
Unfortunately, by the time that she had told Chitose Hitose how she felt, he was already in love with someone else. His response wasn't dismissive or callous, as he clearly wasn't comfortable with hurting her, but it might have been better if he'd been a bastard towards her. Then maybe she could go and let anger consume her, rather than how she was feeling now.
Not that she could change certain things, especially as she caught sight of him yawning as they stood for an assembly in the gym. "Stop that, Chitose! This is an important occasion!"
"Come on, class rep," Chitose grumbled, looking rather like a naughty schoolboy. "It isn't like we haven't had to stand here like this before."
"This time is different, you know. They said that they had a special announcement to make."
"Which could be anything from new classes to a talk about 'responsibility'. You know that we keep on getting lectured to...."
"There is that," she grudgingly allowed, pursing her lips just a bit.
"At least if they do it in the classroom, I can sit down, instead of having to stand around like an idiot...."
"Ugh...."
"Ah, 'ugh'. A sound of annoyance that comes no matter what," sighed a new male voice.
A second voice joined the first. "The dulcet tones of a girl wearing glasses as she reacts to the slacking that her darling does."
"No matter what the situation, she wants to keep on watching over him."
"And will stay loyal to him no matter what might separate them...."
Fumitsuki stiffened and turned to scowl at the boys crouching down at either side of her, each with a western letter in the middle of their foreheads. "What do the two of you think you're doing?!"
"Just giving a sweet and poignant commentary for the life of a girl in glasses."
"After all," added 'C' after 'B' had spoken, "it has to be done to follow the trail of heartache and pain that leads to romance and true love."
"The passion!"
"The vulnerability!"
Grinding her teeth together, she glared at the two boys... before she slammed her hands down on their heads and tossed them to the other side of the gym like a couple of bowling balls. "The nerve of you two!"
Chitose merely shrugged in dismissal of the antics, and turned back towards the platform in front.
That was fortunate, as that came as a relatively young man stepped up onto the stage. He was dressed in a suit, but didn't look like it was his favorite way of dressing, no matter how good he looked in it. Dark and intelligent eyes showed from a strongly featured face, and he kept his dignity as he stepped next to the podium.
"Now that the distraction seems to be done," the principal told the assembled students, "we can now introduce our guest. Mister Fujioka has come to speak to you all from the government, so I hope that you'll pay close attention. Mister Fujioka?"
"Thank you, Principal. I am happy to be here," the young man responded, nodding with respect towards both the administrators and the line of teachers behind him.
Taking a deep breath, Fujioka continued. "My name is Akio Fujioka, and I have been assigned as the official in charge of smoothing out any... difficulties that the new laws may cause. I know that you all will understand how major a shift this is, but please believe me when I say that this is necessary. We need this, and that means that a lot of things will be... allowed, but not everything. You can marry each other, some might marry teachers, and we won't mind staff getting together. But remember, there are still plenty of other laws to watch for. For instance, if the one that you love is younger than the laws allow, you will have to wait until they are old enough.
"However, we will not only be supportive of you students settling into married life, we will be wanting it to happen. This isn't something that we are doing on a whim, and we only want serious relationships. That isn't to say that I'm here to pull couples apart. If you love someone, that is fine by me. In fact, I'll probably be helping you get together with that person. We want to strengthen current relationships and build new ones.
"To that end, I'll be going around the school, looking to see what I can do to help. My job is to be a 'matchmaker', and if I have the chance, that is what I will be. My visits will not only be here, but I will try to see each and every one of you at your homes. This is so that I can not only see who might be good for you, but also will let me see if there is someone around there who might even have a crush on you, or be your crush. So, even if you've been watching someone from a distance, you may be able to get with them.
"In closing, this is a serious matter, but I hope to do this well enough that each of you will be happy in your new marriages. Just don't think that I'm going to arrange it so that it'll be easier to get into a girl's... intimacies. Sorry boys, this is about the future of humanity, not your hormones."
Perhaps she shouldn't have been so surprised, but Fumitsuki was certainly disappointed enough as many of the boys around her groaned with their own disappointments, while:
