Going down the block with a bag strapped to his back wasn't exactly his idea of fun.
"I dunno why we gotta do this," he grumbled, his head slumping just a bit.
"Stop being such a jerk, will you?" Akane groused, scowling at the sullen boy. "It isn't the end of the world."
"Might as well be."
"You're so stupid, you know that? You need to go to school to learn. Right, Ami?"
It took the Nerdette several moments to even recognize that she was being spoken to, if her befuddled expression was anything to go by. "What did you say?"
"Ummm... I was asking if you think that we need to go to school to learn...."
"Oh, yes! But can I ask something?"
"Sure."
"There's a library there?"
"Yeah...." the human girl murmured uncertainly.
"And you get to use it any time that you want?"
"I think so...."
"Oh, wonderful," Ami breathed, clasping her hands together and letting a blissful smile curve her lips.
Akane just blinked as she found herself a bit lost as to what had just happened.
"Don't worry about her," Minako suggested, leaning in towards the human girl with a smile. "She gets this way when books come up."
"She does?" Akane asked.
"Sure does. She actually likes all that reading."
"I guess that people like a lot of different things...."
"And that's why we like you!"
"Huh?"
The blonde catgirl grinned. "We're 'people' to you. Besides...."
"Yeah?"
"Your mother makes some great lunches!" Minako chirped, and brought up her cloth covered bundle so that she could rub it against her cheek. "I'm gonna eat you little chickies...."
There was something to be said for the familiar routine of being able to walk into school and get into things by habit. Changing shoes, putting stuff away, and talking with friends were all simple and easy things to go through. She didn't have to think about them, and did them so naturally that she didn't even recognize that she'd done them until she was finished.
"Oh, wow!" called out one voice as the group moved onto the school grounds. "It's the pokegirls. They're really those pokegirls."
And yet, there was something to be said about being able to enjoy the chance to be hassled and bothered.
"Now, now. Let's keep it simple. Don't crowd them, okay?" Nabiki commented holding up her hands in a placating gesture.
A disgruntled snort came from the crowd of students pressing up against each other to get closer towards the new students. "And why should we listen to you."
"Maybe because I make sense? Or it could be because I'm keeping things organized."
"Got something better?"
"Well... they are staying at my house, so I'm sort of responsible for helping people meet them right," Nabiki murmured, and grinned at her companion. "Isn't that right?"
Michiru gave a slight nod. "It would only be proper."
"Uh-huh! And she's so nice! I'm sure that Nabiki'll help us make lots of friends," Usagi put in.
"You mean that she's... helping you?" asked one of the students.
"She said that she'd introduce us to lots of people, which is good, right?"
Much murmuring came between the students, who were starting to glance at the Tendo girl with a new respect.
Nabiki took in with grace enough to keep from smirking. She might not want to take advantage of her new friends, but the idea of being at the forefront of the new situation was enjoyable. So, if she was able to take control and be the 'go to' girl, then so be it. The way that she figured it had Akane and her in that position anyway.
Besides, it wasn't like she ever planned on making money off of the deal.
Pleased with her own skill in managing the situation, she got things organized as best she could, while:
