When the idea of attacking the equipment had finally been accepted as the one most likely to work, it was actually too late. It didn't save the big fragile dish that had been set up in the camp specifically because they had wanted all this recorded for the various scientists involved - not all of whom could be at the site.
They had broadcast it as soon as was possible. Everyone involved knew what this would mean, that trying to keep it secret would cause even more problems. That those who had psychic abilities of one sort or another were already calling in to find out what had happened to Lightwings.
It was shown in its entirety, with apologies to the Chinese government for operating in their territory to be sure. If it HAD been an Invader Base though, it was something they'd needed to stomp on fast. At least that was their excuse and AEGIS was sticking to it.
So the satellite uplinks had been made and the video parts of the scene sent out.
There was the imagery of Jusenkyo. Lightwings beginning to use his power in the bright spiral. The earthquake, rippling energy discharges lighting the nearby cliffs and marking the waters of the pools themselves.
Lightwings vanishing, with a brief glimpse of some dark figure. A longhaired woman in what looked like a Senshi uniform with a staff. Though commentators were quick to point out it was blurry and could merely be some trick.
Someone reappearing a moment later, collapsing wetly to the ground. Sailor Saturn's attempts to heal the fallen boy. The boy briefly brightening up and revealing that he was Lightwings. Then Saturn pleading and crying as she tried to heal the boy as he died before her.
The clip ended with the technicians leading a distraught Saturn off.
Many of the news people were left trying to figure out what to say afterwards. AEGIS itself was fairly dependent on Lightwings being able to charge in like some overpowered calvary and save the day.
After the shock had passed, reactions began.
At least four countries were threatening to pull all AEGIS funding. They had screwed up so badly, or so these politicians interpreted this, that not only had they been chasing bad intel - they had eliminated their own best weapon. Others indicated that AEGIS must have been infiltrated by one or more enemy groups and a massive shakeup was needed.
