Ranma was no fool; he had known for several months that his life in Nerima was an extremely fragile entity. That something would come along and destroy the fragile peace he had was an inevitable event in Ranma’s mind. The only question that had occupied hiss mind when he thought about his situation was: what will cause the collapse?
At that moment, when he saw the ring, Ranma was confronted with the undeniable evidence that the collapse had occurred and he would have to worry about damage control. While Ranma was going over every rival, fiancée, and loony that he knew in the back of his mind, he was focusing most of his attention on his new wife. He didn’t know, or at the very least couldn’t remember, much about his new wife. Besides the fact that Michiru had been a finance that his father had arranged, her name, and some foggy memories of the wedding night Ranma knew nothing about Michiru.
Luckily fate seemed to have thrown Ranma a bone with the fact that Michiru appeared to be a reasonably level-headed woman. Ranma knew that these next few minutes would be critical if he wanted to avoid a catastrophe and so he decided to think very thoroughly about the words he would use to start the conversation so he could avoid falling victim to his foot-in-mouth disease “Well Michiru, I’m not sure of how exactly we’re going to deal with this situation. The most immediate things we need to worry about are what caused us to get married yesterday and who knows about our marriage. If we know those facts, then we’ll have a base to work with as to how we can deal with chaos that our marriage will likely cause in the neighborhood.”
Ranma’s words caused Michiru to raise an eyebrow as she listened to what he was saying. On the one hand Michiru was happy that her new husband could apparently think with the correct head. On the other hand she was worried about Ranma saying that their marriage would cause chaos in the neighborhood. Michiru then looked into Ranma’s eyes and said, “Why would our marriage cause chaos in the neighborhood? If we’re going to figure out what we’re going to do about this whole situation we both need to be honest with each other.”
Knowing that Michiru was correct, Ranma sighed and hoped that he could answer Michiru’s question in a way that didn’t get him killed. “If you remember Michiru, you came here to investigate that arranged marriage between us that your parents and my father set up. While an arranged marriage by itself is stressful enough, my father compounded the problem by apparently arranging marriages for me and then forgetting about them until the other family comes to fulfill the agreement. Before you came and we were married I had three women after me who all had valid marriage claims. These girls sadly tend to be very possessive and confrontational where I’m involved. Also, most of those girls have admirers who tend to be very shortsighted and short-tempered.”
“When you arrived in town you had an equally valid claim on me and that would have stirred them up as they would have tried to either run you out of town or figure out your place in their pecking order. At the same time that the girls would be doing this, their admirers would have tried to either get me out of the picture or win the heart of the girl they like. While this is the normal routine for when a previously unknown fiancée of mine shows up, this time things are different. You’re my wife now and that means that this whole situation is going to go off like a powder keg.”
