“YOU SMELL SO TASTY!” came a growling voice. “I WILL CRUSH YOU AND RIP YOU AND GOBBLE YOU UP!”
“You don't really want to do that.” Naru said calmly as she continued walking, as though she didn't know what was behind her, or didn't care.
“YES I DO!”
A large hairy fist shot out of the fog, heading straight for Naru's head. At the last possible moment, the schoolgirl suddenly spun around and the huge fist was stopped by an open palm half its size. The sound of demon flesh meeting human flesh was like a gunshot. The pavement beneath Naru's feet cracked from the force transferred through her body from the impact, but the redhead stood firm. The air displaced from fist and palm striking each other was sufficient to blow away the fog hiding the remainder of Naru's attacker. It was an ugly seven-foot tall anthropomorphic combination of a bear and a dog with white fur. The demon's muzzle curled in a sneer as it realized that its punch had been stopped cold by a girl half his size.
“WHAT IS THIS?” the demon growled
“This,” Naru replied with a smirk, “is you forfeiting your one chance to survive this night. I tried to give you a chance to leave me alone but you demons are all the same. You see a human who looks totally defenseless and you can't resist the urge to rip them apart and feast on their bones. Did it never occur to you that a human walking alone at night might have a reason to not be scared out of her mind, huddling in a safe corner waiting for the sun to chase away the bloodthirsty demons?”
“NO HUMAN SURVIVES GRUNDZICK!”
“I disagree.”
Naru curled her unoccupied left hand into a fist and punched Grundzick in the belly, eliciting a howl of pain from the demon as it took a step backwards.
“I KILL YOU!” Grundzick shouted as he lunged at Naru, glimmering claws extended with intent to disembowel the petite powerhouse.
“Tougher demons than you have TRIED!” Naru replied as she dodged the claws and hit Grundzick in the muzzle with an uppercut that lifted the demon off the ground before it landed on its feet.
Naru licked her lips as her eyes began to glow red, much like those of her assailant.. Not waiting for it to shake off the effects of her uppercut, Naru charged in, leaping into the air and kicking Grundzick in the side of the head, knocking the bear-dog demon to the ground. The demon growled in pain, holding its misshapen head.
“Get up already!” Naru demanded, her eyes now glowing brightly with red light. “It's no fun if you can't fight back!”
“FUN!?” Grundzick growled as it climbed to its feet. “THIS FOR GRUNDZICK'S FUN! NOT FOR PREY'S FUN!”
“Who's the prey here? It's sure not me, so it must be you.”
“I SHOW YOU WHO IS PREY!!!”
Grundzick punched Naru in the torso with its huge fist, but the schoolgirl stood unmoved, showing no sign that she had just been struck by a punch that could turn mailboxes into pancakes.
“WHAT!?! WHY PUNCH NO HURT!?”
“Because this game,” Naru said calmly as her right fist glowed with blue energy, “is OVER!”
Naru punched Grundzick's torso with her glowing fist and the energy around it exploded, a wave of energy encompassing Grundzick's body from the waist up, burning away the demonic flesh in an instant. As the light faded, Grundzick's legs and lower body fell away from Naru, the rest of the demon completely vaporized by Naru's final attack. As Grundzick's remains fell over, Naru let out a long sigh as the superhuman power and strength she had felt during the fight fell away in an instant, the light in her eyes immediately going out, leaving them completely normal. With her assailant dead, Naru immediately resumed her route home. Part of Naru hoped she'd be able to make it home without being attacked by another demon, but another part of her hoped that another demon would be stupid enough to attack her. When a demon locked its sights on her, she tended to get infected by its bloodlust even as its power started to flow into her. The more demon power filled her body, the more she craved the demon's death, its instincts for violence intruding on her consciousness. In her calmer moments, Naru thought of those feelings like a drug, she was ashamed to admit that she actually enjoyed fighting and killing demons, leading to her finding excuses to be outside at night and causing her mother a great deal of worry. Naru knew she wasn't invincible, not all demons were as easy to kill as Grundzick, and she had actually gotten severely injured at least once, but so far she had always managed to come out on top.
“Darnit,” Naru muttered as she noticed something, “my blouse got torn again. I should probably take a shower and put my clothes in the wash as soon as I get home, that thing might've had fleas.”
As Naru continued her walk home, a figure in the shadows watched her from afar.
