Chained Kaede: School Signal [Episode 209205]

by Kender

It wasn't a major effort to have it happen, but there was something oddly reassuring about how a school bell could sound the same no matter where one went. Certainly, one could argue about the differences in tone and instrumentation, but no student could misunderstand what was expected when the rhythmic chimes of a deep sounding bell echoed over the school grounds.

Such was the case as the notes of the old style bell rang over the school at that moment.

"Ahhh!" yelped one young woman. "We're going to be late!"

"And when I got up early to make sure that I was on time too!" whined another.

A third started looking around for her bag. "Why does this always happen?!"

"I doubt that the teacher will mind," Miss Minamoto commented.

"Ahh! Look at the time!" Negi choked out. "To be late on the first day!"

Ranma glanced over all of the other students before smirking slightly. It wasn't that he was putting them down, but that he was terribly amused by the sight. He'd thought that this sort of thing only happened on television, but that was obviously not the case. Still, he had other things to do, and was certain that he was going to have to push to get them done.

Leaping up to get to his room, he blinked at the sight of a nearly fully dressed Konoka. "Ya ready ta go?"

"As soon as you're ready," she said, slipping on her shoes.

"Good. Then let's get goin'."

"Sure!"

"Hold on a second!" bit out Setsuna as she held her blouse closed over her bosom where she'd stopped in her hurried attempt to button it upon waking. "What do you think you're doing?!"

"I'm not trying anything bad."

"Is that what you call it?!"

"'Course. We need ta get there as fast as we can, and she can't run as quick as you or me," he replied from where he'd scooped Konoka's slender form into his arms.

"Don't be late, Secchan!" Konoka called cheerfully as Ranma carried her away.

"Damn it!" the young swordswoman barked... until she heard the bell again, and rushed to finish dressing at the same time that she was heading out of the room.

Upon hearing the bell, Genma smiled in fond remembrance of his school days. Books had never interested him, and he had never been too keen on being cooped up with studies all day, but there were certain fun things that had come up back then. Besides, being a delinquent was one thing, but one really had to have respect for one's school.

Of course, he was grown now, and could see certain things through the lens of experience. He might have been lacking in some things, but he could judge the abilities of a fighter well enough, and it seemed that this group was woefully lacking in his department. If they were representative of their generation, then things were going to be rather depressing to predict for the future.

What they needed was someone to push them into gear... and he just knew who could give them a little 'jump' in that direction.

"I'm sure that you kids heard that bell," Genma drawled, and chuckled. "That means that school is in session, and considering how things are going, I will be your teacher today."

Whatever Kuno might have said had been muffled by his own groans, and the floor that he was currently 'eating'.

"That's the problem with you, boy. No real learning, just memorization and following forms!" the gi clad man sighed, and proceeded to return to bopping the boy on the head with his own bokuto.

Then he used the wooden weapon to smack Akane on the backside where she had been trying to crawl across the ground. "And you're getting it too."

Had they actually been able to do much of anything, Akane and her gang might have groaned, while:
