Gatekeepers 1/2: Gate-2 Banned [Episode 209766]

by Kestral

The Chinese government claimed the lands beyond Gate-2 as their own. This was protested. These were ignored mostly, polite refusal being the other response.

Nonetheless, some information was released within the first 48 hours.

First, the world Gate-2 connected to hadn't developed that much. It was still in the Carboniferous Era, and mostly in the Pennsylvanian if the species found on the other side were any indication.

There was, apparently, a single super-continent.

More than that was NOT any of the rest of the world's business as far as China was concerned.

"There goes Gate-3," said a technician. "Tracking software working."

"So every two days until our Gate stabilizes, we can expect one of these to be thrown out," said the commander.

"It's leaving Japan, continuing to track," said the technician. "Yes, sir. Mostly."

"This one going to the Americas? We could finally stop dancing around them with their requests to access OUR gate if they had their own," said the commander.

"No such luck, sir," said the technician. "Initial prediction is Eastern Europe. Program is still narrowing it down."

"Well, maybe next one," griped the commander.

Colonel Zuko cursed this world, not for the first time.

The first time he'd cursed this world was when he'd first stepped through the Gate and the heat and humidity had struck him almost as a physical blow.

The second time he'd cursed this world was when he'd lit a cigarette and discovered that feeling a little light-headed was not the only thing to be a problem here. The burns covering one side of his face had resulted in many many more times he'd cursed this world. He'd cursed the heat, the bugs, the humidity, the fifteen foot tall ferns, the bugs, the swampy ground, the freaking humongous damn spiders that popped out of underground warrens, the lizard-things, the bugs, and the rainstorms that seemed to come in only one variety - nasty-as-all-hell.

There was also the smell, which he didn't care for at all either.

Colonel Zuko had gotten this job because he was the senior officer in the area at the time that Gate-2 had crossed the Chinese border. That he was a TANK commander hadn't mattered much.

He wouldn't mind it so much if he had a tank and was inside one. The tanks would probably arrive in three or four more days.

"Zuko?" said his radio.

"Here, as if I could actually go somewhere else," grumbled Zuko as soon as he'd gotten the dang thing from his belt clip.

"Specialist Xua here," said the voice as if Zuko couldn't recognize the civilian.

"As if I didn't already know that from your voice," commented Zuko. "What is wrong NOW?"

"This is another world, and while Pennsylvanian Carboniferous is the majority of things, I just found an indication that something ELSE is here," said the specialist.

"I don't suppose you found air conditioning, bug repellant, or orders taking me far away from here?" asked Zuko, not bothering to get his hopes up.

"No," said the specialist. "What I found was:"
