"HOW THE HECK DOES THIS MATCH THE PROPHECY?!" Dumbledore screamed in his office. It just didn't make sense, either Neville or Harry was supposed to be marked as Tom's equal and defeat him. The prophecy specifically stated that the Chosen One would be born at the end of July and would be a guy. No where did it state that "She will cleave him in half like a butcher"!
Dumbledore didn't know what was worse, that fact that his dear prophecy had been smashed to bits, or the fact that he wasn't able to get Harry to safety. Young Sirus had been the first to arrive at the Potter's home and he had immediately fire called the ministry telling them about the switch and that Tom was dead. The news of Tom's death by She-Who-Cleaves, as Lily was already be referred to, had spread like wildfire among magical Britain.
This was a major problem. Dumbledore knew that there would be a major political upset when Tom was defeated. He also knew that he could hold things together if it had been Harry who had defeated Tom. An infant half-blood male savior would have a lot less fallout then a full grown muggleborn witch savior. If Sirus had contacted him first, Dumbledore was sure he could have spun it so that Harry, and not Lily, was seen as the savor. It wasn't that Dumbledore had anything against Lily; it just would have been less shocking for the magical world if they had a different savior.
There was one thing about the affair that really worried Dumbledore. How did Lily defeat Tom? The Ministry's investigation team had confirmed that Lily had cut Tom in half. However, they couldn't identify the spell that had been used. In fact, they weren't even sure what had been used. There were lingering signs of some unidentifiable energy in Tom's wounds. Dumbledore just didn't know what to do.
