No matter how much he tried, nothing ever seemed to work out the way Ranma Saotome wanted it. Every time he tried to do something, it always blew up in his face. That was why, when offered a wish by the strange genie, he had gone to Nabiki for help. He had been hoping Nabiki would be able to word his wish in a way that did not screw him over. Naturally, he had been surprised and shocked when Nabiki asked for them to be transported into a world based on one of her anime or manga. Before he could voice his concern about the wish, however, he had been blinded by a flash of light.
The first thing that caught Ranma’s eye after the flash cleared up was the vast expanse of clear blue ocean water that stretched out to the horizon. Nabiki’s bedroom was long gone and Ranma was currently sitting in a small rowboat in the middle of the ocean. Neither Nabiki or the blond genie were anywhere in sight; although, there was another person in the rowboat with him.
Ranma looked over at his companion in surprise, recognizing him instantly. He wore a red shirt, blue shorts and sandals, but the most distinguishing article of clothing was the straw hat on his head. The young man was Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the One Piece.
Ranma could not believe it. Apparently, the genie had done exactly what Nabiki had asked and had transported them into the world of a manga, One Piece. Well, the genie had transported him at least as he did not see Nabiki anywhere.
Ranma grasped his head as it was suddenly flooded with new information. It was as if he was remembering an entirely different life. He suddenly found that he knew exactly why he was in a rowboat in the middle of the sea with Luffy. The two of them had just set off from their home town to fulfill their dreams. Ranma volunteered to become part of Luffy's pirate crew to help him achieve his dream of being king of the pirates, while Luffy promised to help Ranma become the world's greatest martial artist.
“Well, this may be it Ranma," Luffy said with his trademark smile. "This may be the end of our voyage and only after we had just set out too."
"What?" Ranma asked. He was still coming to grips with the fact he was sitting next to a manga character, one he suddenly had memories of being best friends with, and could not think of a better response.
"I know, hard to believe, right? Who would've thought we'd get caught up in a whirlpool so soon after leaving shore."
"Whirlpool?" Ranma asked. It was at this point that his ears registered the loud churning of the water around them. Looking off the side of the boat, the pigtailed marital artist's eyes widened in surprise seeing that, as Luffy had said, their little boat was being pulled into a humongous whirlpool. The boat was firmly caught in the whirlpool's current and was descending into the spiral at an increasing speed. A large wave suddenly slammed into the boat, sending water spraying over the two occupants.
"We have to do something?!" A now female Ranma shouted over the roar of the water, deciding to worry about being transported into a manga later.
"There's no one else around to save us," Luffy replied, completely calm despite their impending doom. "It seems we have no choice, but to go down. I mean it's not like we could swim away from a whirlpool."
Luffy chuckled, recalling how, even if there was no strong current, swimming would not be an option anyway.
By now, the boat had been drawn deep into the spiral of the whirlpool. Wave after wave washed over the boat, forcing them to grab onto the side to keep from being swept overboard.
Ranma could not believe this was happening. He had only been in Nabiki's room a couple minutes ago. He had been sure she would be able to word his wish in a way that did not allow something horrible to happen. Now, he was trapped in a manga and about to be dragged under by a whirlpool!
"Why can't anything ever go right?!!" Ranma screamed just before the rowboat disappeared beneath the watery vortex.
