Shortly after the Tenth Angel was defeated, everyone from NERV, including Asuka, Rei and Shinji, headed around the immediate area to make sure that the falling angel had not done any real damage. The three EVA pilots were assigned a low priority and minimal danger area, due to their age, or at least that is what Gendo Ikari thought.
"This sucks. We should be helping out in one of the other areas," Asuka muttered. "What sort of danger could possibly come these old abandoned buildings?"
"That is Commander Ikari's orders. Even though it is a minimal danger area, it still needs to be secured," Rei replied.
Shinji saw that one of the old buildings still had power, via flickering lights. The word written in English on the front of the building made no sense: ENCOM. Shinji pointed it out and turned to the two girls.
"I think we had better check that building out. Rei let Misato know where we are heading," Shinji said.
"Understood," Rei replied and radioed back to NERV and let Misato know of their situation.
The three teen-agers made their way inside the building and saw that lights were still working in the lobby. Rei found a notepad behind the front desk and frowned as she read it.
"What is it, wonder-girl?" Asuka demanded.
"It is a note written by a Kevin Flynn with the word 'reindeerflotilla' listed and B2-35," Rei replied.
Shinji looked over a map and saw how things were laid out. "It's room 35 on the second basement level. It is some sort of lab. I guess we should find out what's going on with that. Rei?"
Rei nodded and gave an update to Misato. The three decided against using the elevator and used the map to find the stairs. Asuka removed the bolts from the hinges of the door and the three of them pulled the door out of the doorframe. They quickly proceeded down to the second basement level and found room 35. Entering the room, they saw what appeared to be a group of five lasers pointing from the entrance door wall to the opposite side.
Asuka glanced up confused. "What is with that? That makes no sense."
Rei found a clipboard with notes attached. She quickly read through the notes and nodded.
"Teleportation project. Those lasers are supposed to be able to transport someone from one location to another place on Earth at the speed of light."
"Mein gott! That's impossible!" Asuka declared.
"Apparently not. Kevin Flynn was the president of the company and used it to travel from one ENCOM building to another," Rei said, as she read more of the notes.
Asuka shook her head and headed over to the computer and tried to bring up some files. However the screen blanked out and asked for a password.
"A password? How the heck am I supposed to know what they used for a password?" Asuka muttered.
"Reindeerflotilla maybe?" Shinji asked mildly. "There had to be a reason he wrote that down."
Asuka glanced at Shinji once and typed that word into the computer and pressed enter. Rei quickly radioed back to NERV and reported what they had found. The computer hummed a bit as it processed the password. The three children stared at the screen as it went through several checks. The screen blacked out for a second and then words appeared on the screen.
"What?" Asuka got out, right before the three of them were struck in the back by the lasers behind them and digitized.
Asuka opened her eyes and noticed that her hand was red and had glowing circuitry lines running up and down it. She sat up and noticed that Rei was nearby glowing a blue color and Shinji was glowing yellow. A closer look showed that it was the circuitry lines running up and down their bodies that were glowing, and not they themselves. Asuka took a look around and rubbed her eyes. The sky was black with no stars and beams of light reached up from the landscape and into the sky.
"Where are we?" Asuka demanded.
She shook her head and went over to shake Shinji and Rei awake. The two of them looked at Asuka and then themselves. Asuka was pleased to note that Rei looked shocked for the first time she could recall.
"Where are we?" Rei asked.
"I have no idea, but this place makes no sense. There are glowing grid lines on the ground," Asuka replied.
"I guess we should find out where we are and how to get back," Shinji muttered.
"I think one of those light beams is a place to start," Rei said, as she pointed to one that looked closer.
