Setsuna's Fault: Not Quite Tsundere [Episode 226146]

by Kestral

Akane Tendo, ashigaru/low caste samurai, couldn't wipe the smile off her face as Ranma Saotome started redoing all of the bandages. "It's nothing. Just a few scratches."

"This is gonna sting like blazes," said Ranma before cleaning a six inch cut along her ribs.

Akane hissed like live coals that had just gotten a dipper of water across them.

"So, what did you see of them?" asked Ranma after applying a fresh bandage.

"I didn't. They threw explosive kunai, then smoke bombs, before I even knew they were there," said Akane. "There was something 'off' about the smoke too. Typical smoke bombs don't make me throw up for a half hour."

"You defended this place though," pointed out Ranma.

Akane just raised an eyebrow and frowned slightly.

"Right," said Ranma with a chuckle.

"I used the Tendo Ascending Whirlwind Technique to clear the air, which was tricky with the whole 'throwing up' thing," said Akane. "They retreated immediately. I tried a Lightning Blade attack but I was too sick from that smoke to aim effectively."

"Poison smoke," guessed Ranma. "Odd. Usually you wouldn't use something like that outdoors, it dissipates too quickly to provide more than a temporary advantage."

Akane nodded at that. "I know. So you have no idea who it was?"

"No, and we're not exactly a wealthy area or anything like that," agreed Ranma. "So the whole 'why' is kinda unclear."

"We keep an eye out at checkpoints like this for bandits," said Akane, getting up and stretching. She winced at a couple of moves and didn't repeat them. "A ninja assault squad is entirely different."

Interesting. Hadn't expected that angle.

"This is horrible! Final Fantasy and Naruto mixed with Ranma Saotome? Are you crazy?"

Interesting question. As I am a nonhuman intelligence, I would suspect the answer is 'yes' - as sanity is defined by humans of your socio-cultural matrix.

"That is NOT a particularly reassuring answer."

Look at your own species. Sanity, as you currently define it, requires fitting into a particular prevelant mindset. A Russian from 8000 BCE and one from your 'present' would find the other to be irredeemably insane.

"I'm sorry I asked."

"There's only one reason for this kind of attack on your post," said Ranma, running his hand across a pitted wall.

"They were mainly occupying my attention, delaying me, and they were mostly interested in leaving," said Akane.

"That and they were in a hurry," said Ranma. "No idea why?"

Akane shook her head. "No. It's been puzzling me. One or two gennin I could take. I didn't see much but I was facing at least five or six, and probably higher level than gennin."
