She was currently working for the Jehanna Corporation as an inspector-maintainer for various space stations - especially any defense ships they had. It was her specialty and her great love.
When she'd been contacted by Shueisha Publishing regarding a robot owned by a writer, she'd regarded it as something to break up the monotony of a long space voyage.
What she'd found was fairly intriguing.
This synthetic, a fairly advanced type and model, had no listed owner when she'd put in the data. She'd wondered if it was 'hot' or lost since it would have been fairly pricey if new. Instead she came up with nothing at all. Even the manufacterer seemed to have no record of the unit.
Finally the owner left and Kizna just addressed the unit directly after making sure the charging cables were in place. "Okay, how about you tell me what's up?"
The unit lay there without moving.
"I know you're operational," said Kizna, her ears going back in annoyance. "Your memory was wiped, but it looks like there are bits and pieces left."
The eyes snapped open and flicked towards the cat-eared repairer.
"You are a nearly completely functional, combat grade, anatomically correct, gynoid," stated Kizna. "I'll repair the damage to your knee and forearm, the shoulder damage is fairly intensive though and I'll have to wait till we're docked at Bulova Station before I can get the parts. I'm going with these guys up until Gravitas Station, so I can do the repairs on that part of the journey. I want to hear from you though. What's the story? Why were you discarded?"
The gynoid regarded her with unblinking eyes. "Unable to recover full data. Available data insufficient to speak with complete certainty."
"Extrapolate then," said Kizna, too experienced to be unnerved by that unrelenting stare. Other than to note that she'd have to check the human behavior emulation files and make sure they were working.
"I was a bodyguard unit," stated the gynoid. "Previous owner killed. Method unknown. Likely related to damage sustained."
Kizna nodded, this fitting in with what she'd already figured out. The damage done looked to have been inflicted by an EMP pulse, plus the damage to one knee looked like a laser hit. The shoulder damage though - that was from a railgun. That section would have to be completely rebuilt. "You apparently went down fighting."
"Insufficient," said the gynoid.
Kizna's ears flicked around as she considered the possible meanings. "Your image came up in a search, but it was for an old offplane imported series of illustrated novels. Someone built you to resemble that character."
The gynoid remained silent for longer than one would expect before she finally asked the obvious question. "Who am I?"
Kizna rotated the monitor of one screen in the mechanic's bay to face the gynoid. "You appear to be a duplicate, with some personality elements that are temporarily offline, of:"
