Demon Japan: Resting In Shadows [Episode 233980]

by Kender

The room was darkened to being a pool of shadows, but that did not mean that it was empty of light. On the banks of screens that lined the walls, lines of data streamed in a great collage that resembled more of a giant map than a paper report. Here and there, boxes would appear, showing the specifics of certain points and what was going on with them. Yet, for all the activity going on in that chamber, the only sound was of a lighter opening and closing again and again.

He really didn't need it, but the blond man in the suit wore his sunglasses anyway. It made him look almost as impenetrable as the walls themselves, almost as if he was a fixture in this place. Even his face was as still as stone, showing not even a flicker of emotion. About the only sign that he wasn't merely a statue was how he was playing with his lighter in one hand.

But then, Mitsuo Yamaki didn't need to put on a 'happy face' for anyone, especially for those who knew about his work. As far as his superiors were concerned, they needed a hard man for the job, and his subordinates trusted that he was strong enough to show them the way. He knew this, and knew that it had to be the case, but it wasn't his sole motivation. Being lazy or emotional didn't get the job done, and he hadn't gotten this far by giving in to much of anything.

That was what had him in the center of Hypnos, the system and organization that he had conceived and created. Having a central monitoring organization might have seemed to be a bit much, but he knew that it was necessary in these times. From there, he could see everything and anything that was going on, as they were collecting all sorts of data from police bands, security cameras, phone communications, and other such forms of data streams.

Secrecy was of the utmost concern, as there were too many problems to allow anyone to know of what he had there. Not only would the creatures from that... whatever it was try to manipulate his system, people would complain loudly about having a government office that could gain access to their bank records and police files within moments. However, the truth was that he didn't care about such things, as high school girls sneaking off with sugar daddies weren't his man purview. No, his concern was about what was emerging into their world, and being ready to call for a response to an attack, be it large or small.

Such a thing was why he was currently looking at a display showing video of an attractive woman walking. As much as it was natural for a man of his age to look at someone like her, he was clearly not liking what he was seeing. Certainly, she did look good in the lab coat outfit that she wore, but he was easily able to see the little discrepancies in her, now that he knew what he was looking for.

A hand flick was all that he needed for the operator in charge of what he was being shown to add a second stream of data, with this one showing the initial intrusion into the system. One might have displayed the apparent 'glitch' on a basic system, but for such a secure server, it was clear that this was not to be ignored. Checks had to be done, and it gave hints that not all was right with Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu. She was acting oddly, and as the initial investigation continued, it became more and more obvious that she was not the woman that she had been. That fact became especially clear when footage of her from before her own encounter with the phenomenon was compared to the recent data.

It meant that there was likely only one conclusion, and that meant that there was no chance for letting this slide along.

"Ootori," he murmured in a tone that was even despite what he was about to order.

One of the operators looked up from her console and turned her head towards him. "Yes, sir?"

"Have security details be put onto Doctor Sohryu. When the moment is right, they will deal with her."

"Sir?"

"Is there a problem?" Yamaki asked her.

"No, of course not. It's just that... she's a human being...."

"Incorrect. She is one of them now. Whether she just had her mind twisted by those things, or was taken over by one of them, we can't take the risk."

"Understood."

"Good. Just remember that what we may be seeing is possibly her body, but there the woman inside died some time ago. We can't even tell if it's just in her skin, or transformed itself into her appearance."

"Yes, sir," the long haired woman confirmed, her hands flying over her keyboard as she typed. "Will you want combat teams assigned as well?"

"Actually... have them on standby. This could get very messy, and I'd like to clean it up quickly and efficiently," the blond man stated, snapping his lighter closed, while:
