Except that the whole Mizuki thing was going to go off-the-rails, careening off a cliff, and explode like what happened on Chinese New Year 2036 on that one particular Earth. Which was when he'd sneezed and filled the sky with dragons, but honestly that hadn't been his fault and it had turned out pretty cool in his opinion.
Which actually inspired him. What better way to say cool sorcerer than a shoulder-sized dragon? A bit of a mix between Western and Eastern varieties, and an elemental breath weapon - done.
Hmmm. Might be better to go with something less fearsome. Humans could be a bit unpredictable, wouldn't do to have the boy killed for someone to try and claim the pet. Well, another detail to ponder.
Let's see, magical equipment. Ability to duck into a hidden tower. Maybe some magical cards?
Yeah, why not?
Heck, that might work better than the D&D stuff.
The Third Hokage realized that Naruto had stolen the secret scroll of kinjutsu. Also a scroll of secret cooking techniques and a scroll that had been sitting in the tower since the days of the First Hokage that NOBODY had been able to get open. The First had tried, the Second had tried, and he had tried. None had succeeded. The Fourth Hokage hadn't been able to get it open, but had worked out the mechanism of the seal and used it to upgrade his Hiraishin technique.
Therefore he was watching curiously through his crystal ball as Naruto opened the scroll and vanished. With both the kinjutsu scroll, the sealed scroll, and the cooking technique scroll.
When Naruto reappeared, it was sufficiently different that Hiruzen Sarutobi decided he'd have to investigate in person.
"Hokage-sama?!" yelped Mizuki.
"Mizuki," said Hiruzen Sarutobi, flanked by Ibiki Morino and several masked ANBU. "What is going on here?"
"It's that demon fox brat!" declared Mizuki. "I tricked him into stealing the kinjutsu scroll and when I came to collect it, kill him, and defect to Orochimaru - he hit me with a curse-seal! You have to punish him!"
The Hokage stared at the chunin who had just declared all that and now seemed to expect him to go punish a twelve year old boy. "Say what?"
"The child with the bad grades hit you with a curse-seal?" asked Ibiki.
"Yes! A compulsory truth curse seal! He should be punished! Killed! Chopped into tiny bits!" said Mizuki. "He should be torn into itty bitty pieces and buried alive!"
"I see," said Ibiki, stepping up to Mizuki and looking the chunin over. "Where is this boy now?"
"I don't know," said Mizuki. "He used some jutsu I've never seen before to vanish right in front of me! It must be the fox!"
"Right," said Ibiki, putting one hand down on Mizuki's shoulder in a grip that the chunin would never be able to break. "I think we should have a nice long talk."
The Hokage watched as realizations started dawning upon Mizuki's face and merely offered the chunin a faint smile as Ibiki began leading the "guest" to new quarters.
Ibiki stopped before completely leaving. "Hokage-sama. This 'compulsory truth curse-seal'?"
The Hokage nodded. "Naruto? How long will the effect last?"
There was momentary silence before the air seemed to solidify into a Naruto whose clothing had changed a bit. "For him, probably another two hours. Limited utility though. It wouldn't hold even long enough for me to apply it to anyone here. Well, maybe Iruka-sensei."
"Ah, interesting," said Ibiki over his shoulder as he continued his little escort.
"Any long-term effects?" asked the Hokage of Naruto.
"No," said Naruto. "Once the target breaks free, the mark will fade off. How'd you know where I was?"
The Third Hokage favored Naruto with a smirk. "One doesn't get to the position of Hokage without learning a few things."
"Hmmm, point. Good point," answered Naruto.
"Naruto?" asked Iruka, coming out of the underbrush. "Hokage-sama? What's going on?"
"I opened the sealed scroll, stuff happened," said Naruto, summing it all up.
The Third Hokage glanced at the creature currently perched on one of Naruto's shoulders and thought more detail was certainly indicated though it HAD been nicely summed up.
In fact, Naruto had perched on his shoulder-
